iFi iDSD Diablo-X Headphone Amp DAC Review

iDSD Diablo-X: Devilishly Divine

iFi has just released the latest iteration of its incredibly popular DAC/amp the iDSD Diablo — The ifi iDSD Diablo-X Headphone Amp DAC. The Diablo-X is the first DAC/amp on the market to support the revolutionary xMEMS' solid state monolithic speaker technology. This little devil of a device has received a cosmetic upgrade, having switched from fire red to a sleek black chassis. As if the Diablo-X couldn't get any hotter, iFi has incorporated a new power mode to really heat things up.

About iFi Audio

iFi Audio has been around since 2012 and is headquartered in Southport UK. They produce over 50 products and their mission is to do one thing: make your music sound better. 50 products is a large undertaking for any company, but iFi represents a good balance of quality products with affordable enough prices, ranging from entry-level to mid-tiered music lovers and budgets.

Design

The Diablo-X has been given an aesthetic makeover — And black is the new red. The original iDSD Diablo was hard to miss with its striking red chassis and it seems iFi has taken it down a notch, opting for a matte black color for the Diablo-X. The playful nod to the devilish red color isn't entirely lost on the Diablo-X — The lettering has been changed from black to red as well as changing the power/volume control knob to a metallic red.

The size and weight of the Diablo-X remains the same, having kept its battery-pack form as a conveniently portable DAC. One thing that ifi doesn't do is skimp on the accessories. The original Diablo was packed with accessories and the Diablo-X is no exception.

I/O

Everything on the back of the Diablo-X is the same as the original Diablo. On the back side you'll find a 4.4mm balanced output, S/PDIF input, USB-C charging input, and a male USB-Type A input. Apple users can connect their iPhone to the Diablo-X with a lightning to USB-A adapter, and Android users are not left out, as they can use a USB On-The-Go (OTG) cable. Just like the original Diablo, you've got an LED light for battery status that changes colors based on the battery level.

Where things get different is on the front side of the Diablo-X. You've still got a quarter-inch unbalanced headphone jack, a 4.4mm balanced headphone jack, power mode switch, LED indicator and power/volume control knob. The power mode is present on both the Diablo and Diablo-X but there are some big changes with the Diablo-X's power output levels.

xMEMS Power Mode

The original Diablo features three power modes: ECO for highly sensitive in-ear monitors, Normal for medium sensitivity headphones, and Turbo for most-demanding headphones. The Diablo-X also features three power modes: Normal for most over or on-ear headphones, turbo for current-hungry headphones, and xMEMS power mode for compatible IEMs and headphones. The Diablo-X is actually the first DAC/amp on the market to support the xMEMS solid state monolithic speaker technology.

What the heck is the xMEMS technology you ask? According to iFi, this technology uses the piezoelectric effect to create a paper-thin solid-state speaker. These micro-speakers offer great potential to push the boundaries of IEM and headphone performance. You can expect a faster response time, better imaging and accuracy with the xMEMS power mode.

An important thing to note here is that this power mode only works with compatible xMEMS IEMs that support this technology. ifi has confirmed this and is working with several HiFi companies to expand the current options of xMEMS IEMs available on the market.

Sound Impressions

For my listening session I paired the Diablo-X with the Focal Stellia Headphones using a Black Dragon Portable Headphone Cable, as well as the Meze 109 Pros with a Black Dragon Headphone Cable. Before I dive into the sound quality of the Diablo-X, I want to reiterate that the xMEMS power mode is only compatible with xMEMS IEMs.

Overall, the Diablo-X has a neutral-warm sound signature. The Diablo-X is very powerful, so we recommend pairing it with a pair of power-hungry headphones that demand some extra juice from a headphone amplifier/amp. Each power mode presents a unique sound: The normal power mode is the most neutral sounding with good detail retrieval. I felt I was able to pick up on tiny details very well and the vocals were clear with good instrument separation. The turbo power mode is the most warm with a powerful and impactful bass. You'll get more energy and liveliness from this mode than that of the normal power mode.

As I mentioned the Diablo-X is very powerful and its power was most evident in the differing volume levels of each power mode. The volume knob is highly sensitive, so much so that one turn too high may be too loud for your ears to handle. To really test the power of the Diablo-X I paired them with the Sony MDR-Z1R headphones and they performed the best.

Features

ifi hasn't incorporated any new features in the Diablo-X that aren't already present in the Diablo. iFi skips the bells and whistles here with the Diablo-X in favor of just sheer power and good sound. That’s it. It still supports MQA with full MQA decoding, PureWave and OptimaLoop — And that's really about it for "techy" features. The Diablo-X is a simple plug-and-play device in this regard.

Dragon Headphone Cables

We recommend pairing the Diablo-X with our Black Dragon Headphone Cable. The black dragon provided a warm, fuller bodied sound to the normal power mode which was on the neutral, almost analytical side. The turbo mode, which was slightly warmer was supported well by the Black Dragon which brought more musicality to the sound. The Diablo-X is compatible with our Silver Dragon USB Cable and you may be asking yourself, why upgrade a USB cable? Well, the Silver Dragon USB Cable will provide more detail and resolution to the Diablo-X's sound without any unwanted coloration. With our USB cables you'll get the best possible audio transfers. Most standard USB cables are not up to the task of large bit rate information, but our cables have been optimized to handle the transfer of large hi-res files. Simply select the USB-C connector for your dragon cable and you’ll be set!

Why Dragon Audio Cables?

Generally, stock audio cables are manufactured with subpar materials, metals with impurities, poor geometries, and an overabundance of layers to make them look and feel like a fire hose. Inconsistency and lack of quality control in stock cables can lead to poor sound quality and a veiled sound vs what the musician intended for you to hear and feel from the music. Dragon cables are handcrafted with the highest standards and made to order according to your specific needs. At Moon Audio, we create a custom cable for you using the highest quality UP-OCC silver or copper conductors that can be manufactured. UP-OCC metals are void of impurities and are optimized for signal transfer and sound quality. We have one of the largest collections of audio and headphone connection options available online and we create limitless audio cable options depending on your specific gear and needs.

Silver Dragon Sound Signature: The Silver Dragon is the original cable. Silver strands clarify instrument separation, increase the soundstage, and find previously lost high and mid-frequency sounds. Transients appear more cohesive and the bass tighter for a more controlled sound. The detail and clarity of the Silver Dragon make it a perfect match for classical music and other genres with many nuanced instruments.

Black Dragon Sound Signature: The Black Dragon is warm and smooth with a musical presentation. Copper strands enhance the body, shape, and immediacy of the music. The detail and expansiveness of the Black Dragon make it a flexible fit where a broad range of musical genres are played. It can also improve bass frequencies on bass-light headphones. The smooth, musical quality makes it a perfect fit for headphones that tend to sound a bit edgy or bright. Despite its warmth, the Black Dragon does not have a laid-back, lush sound. It is much closer to neutral, making it a very natural-sounding cable. For more information on finding your signature sound, visit our Sound Signature Guide.

The Verdict

Overall, the iDSD Diablo-X is complementary of the original iDSD Diablo, sporting a new chassis and an all-new XMEMs power mode. I’m looking forward to watching the future of XMEMs technology unfold and see how it shapes the future of audiophile audio gear, headphones, and IEMs. If you’re looking for a portable DAC/amp that can drive your power-hungry cans and packs a punch, all while fitting snuggly in your back pocket, then the Diablo-X is a great choice!
