The Black Dragon headphone cable V2 is a wonderful match for the Grado GS-1000, AKG K701, Sennheiser HD800 and many other high end headphones.

The cable is extremely smooth sounding with great low end and wonderful voicing. It will also remove the veil from all headphones just like the Silver Dragon.

Most stock headphone cables are made of poor ultra thin conductors that work as a bottle neck for the sound. Poor Geometries, no shielding, rubber jackets and a whole host of other issues by OEM (stock) cables can limit what the headphone driver can produce in terms of clarity and definition.

The Black Dragon offers a great well rounded sound that suits most genres of music. It is a little warmer than the Blue Dragon with fuller sound and more bottom end weight.

Both the Blue and Black Dragon are not a laid back lush sound, they are closer to neutral, natural sounding cables. The Black Dragon is very smooth and musical and that is the best way to describe this cable. It is perfect for a headphone that can tend to sound a bit edgy or bright and its a great addition to improve the bass frequencies on a "bass light" headphone.

The Black Dragon can by used not only as a detachable cable for many varieties of headphones, but it can also be used to hack your headphones. We can "hard-wired" to just about any headphone such as Grado, Sennheiser or AKG. You can also upgrade your exisiting headphones that have detachable cables with our Black Dragon. There are many connections to a variety of headphones to choose from on the menu above.

We recently added some specialized "Black Dragon headphone cables" for certain headphone models and brands: the Black Dragon Premium HD800 Headphone CableBlack Dragon HD700 Headphone Cable, & the Black Dragon Shure Headphone Cable.

We use 4 x 21.5AWG Teflon insulated stranded conductors using pure single crystallized UP-OCC pure copper with 7N purity 99.99998%. This means more music, clarity and sound quality gets to your ears as purity in cable construction, cable design and quality of materials make a noticeable difference in the sound quality of your headphones.

Each conductor is made up of a special varying size stranding geometry. The copper stranding is mixed with Kevlar stranding to reinforce the conductor. Making it stronger overall and less prone to failure due to the harsh constant flexing a headphone cable receives.

The conductors are then surrounded by cotton and then a layer of Teflon tubing. The new v2 version is now also double shielded and placed in a polyethylene jacket for further protection.

The Headphone connectors are soldered directly to the conductors of the cable. The splicing method used by other cable companies using a stock cable's connectors is a poor method. We have developed many of the hard to find connection options utilizing plastic injection molded connectors. Great expense has been taken to bring as many hard to find connection systems for the most populat headphones. If you cant find the connection system you desire please contact us.

The wire is soldered to the connector with Cardas silver solder.

I didnt get to try my HE 560 headphones with the stock cable as it did not have the 3.5 mm socket end I required for my DAC.
After much searching I found Moon Audio and after clarifying with me exactly what cable ends I was after the cable was ordered on a Friday and delivered to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia the following Friday, and was exactly the correct cable.
I'm new to the high end audio scene but the cable is of excellent quality and I'm currently buring it and the headphones in .. (Posted on 2/16/2017)

I purchased the amazing cable to complete my personal audio setup. I've been into home theater and fi-fi for over forty plus years. Yes I'm old !!

About six months ago I entered head first into the rabbit hole of personal audio .First came a Sennheiser momentum 2.0 then a Black Dragon for the headphones.

Next came an Oppo HA -2SE. On to the next level, HD650, Emotiva DC -1 along with a Cavalli Liquid Carbon amp.

The missing piece was a Black Dragon V2. With the Balanced Black Dragon, I am one happy camper in audio bliss !!

Got this as a replacement for my HD-800 stock cable. I've only just received it, so no 'burn in' time, yet. But I've immediately noticed a few things:

Bass frequencies have always been rather light on the HD-800, requiring a mild boost in the 80-150hz range to fill out some of the missing 'body'. The dragon does not provide any bass boost at all, but does noticeably tighten and focus the bass in this frequency range.

Imaging is improved! Already a strength of HD-800, the Dragon noticeably improves imaging across the spectrum. I immediately hear more precise and focused staging of sound - this is equal parts surprising and delightful.

If you're in the market for a stock cable replacement or are looking to take the HD-800 sound to the next level, yes, this is a worthy investment. (Posted on 7/5/2016)

This cable is incredible!

I was somewhat disappointed in the lower end of my HiFi Edition X until Drew's cable arrived. The bottom end not only reaches deeper but the speed of every note seems to have increased.

I'm not at all surprised since Moon has recabled each of my favorite cans with similar results Ultrasone Ed 8, Fostex TH900, and Oppo PM3 . (Posted on 3/15/2016)

I have matched ALO, Toxic and Cardas to LCD-2 r2s, HD650s, AKG 702s but when it came to the HE5, LCD-XC and HD800 I knew I had to go with Moon.

The Black Dragon tames the sizzle of the HD800 perfectly. At first, you think the highs are recessed but after a few bars of *any* genre (well-recorded) you realize the balance is there and the entire frequency spectrum is given equal weight just as the recording demands.

The Silver Dragon is perfect for the LCD-XC and addresses the recessed highs while keeping the mids and bass in balance. I can't recommend their cables highly enough - and if you don't go for the fancy connectors, they're a good value! (Posted on 1/25/2016)

It makes my he560 sing. After the burn in, that is. Drew was spot on when he insisted I go with the Black instead of the more expensive Silver Dragon. Nichole told me the same thing but I was skeptical at first.

The cable was out of stock when I placed the order, expecting delivery way after Xmas. To my pleasant surprise, they came in the mail a week before Xmas so I had an earlier treat. That must take Moon-Audio extra efforts to complete the works and ship to me in no time.

When I had to send them back due to a loose connector (supplied by HifiMan), listening to the stock cable is unbearable. The same can be said about my in-house custom cabled DT-831, AH-W100, and AKG 240f. That's how good the BD is.

I'm sure Drew will check it out carefully and have my connector replaced in no time. And looking around, I don't think I can find cables sounding as good or better at lower price. Therefore, 5 star quality, 5 star price, and 5 start value. (Posted on 1/11/2016)
Essential Upgrade to Beyerdynamic T5PReview by Girlfrombrasil

Read reviews all over the net about Drew's headphone hacks and even saw him in action on You Tube. After reading reviews about the T5P's headphone wire build issues, (wires are flimsy) I decided I wanted him to hack the phones (w/Sennheiser HD 800 connectors/Black Dragon V2 cable) so they'd be detachable.

His work is amazing and an essential upgrade to the T5P's.

Their sound was initially crisp, clear, rather piercing in the high end and lacking bass in the low end. Now they still sound crisp but well-rounded with a smoother high end and a more pronounced bass.

The Black Dragon headphone V2 cable is a superior upgrade and I would definitely recommend it! (Posted on 10/18/2015)

As others have noted, as an upgrade to HD-800s, it would be difficult to top a Black Dragon.

I can't claim to have tried all the HD-800 cable upgrades, but I've tried quite a number of them, including cables from Cardas and ALO. I used to be a professional classical guitarist and have a pretty good ear for these things.

The Black Dragon has incredible bass timbre and bass extension, and just enough emphasis to balance out the HD-800s rather light bass. The mids are really quite wonderful. The cable also tones down the HD-800's treble glare.

But the real merit of this cable isn't to be found in any register: the cable's real merit is its vast and layered soundstage. It has an elegance I've never heard in a headphone cable before, and certainly complements the HD-800's greatest strength.

As for build quality--the cable shell doesn't compete with, say, a Cardas clear in terms of luxury, but it's certainly functional (honestly, this is perhaps the cable's only weakness--the sleeve really should be a bit nicer). I took the connections apart to
examine the insides. Some companies don't know how to wire and solder.

Whoever soldered my Black Dragon is an expert. I've rarely seen such skilled soldering--in any application. Generally, I'd say, the cable is built to last a lifetime, not built to be replaced after six months or a year.

This cable, overall, is one of the best values I've seen in the audiophile world. (Posted on 10/9/2015)

Living in Mumbai, India its not possible for me to audition products. I have no choice but to buy on recommendations. Here's where Drew really shines. He has patiently replied to all my emails, clearing all my doubts. Customer Service at it's best.

I placed the order on 4th June and I received the package on 8th June 2015. In my books this is fantastic delivery. From US to India in 4 days flat, awesome.

My gear: Hirez flac files via audirvana on a mac, Wireworld Starlight 7 USB interconnect to Oppo HA-1 and the HD-800.

The first impression of the Black Dragon V2 was something in between a jaw drop and disbelief. I had always used the HD 800 with its stock cable using the single-ended outputs of the HA-1. My volume control on the Oppo was always on full or 0db and I would still strain on a quiet parts of a recording. I stuck the BD V2 to the 4 pin balanced output of the HA-1, and the vol had to be brought down almost half way.

Second, the HD 800 opened up completely. Finally, I could hear perfect sound staging, the bass improved and things generally sounded a tad brighter to which Drew assured me that after 40-60 hours of burn in things will smooth down.

The cable looks very professionally constructed. The 4 pin balanced socket and the HD 800 connectors were secure and looks solid. The cable coils up well, thus easy to store after use.

Highly recommended.

Wow! Incredible well-rounded sound on the AKG K712 Pro now with the Black Dragon V2 Cable... I am finding that this cable works well with all music genres on this headphone - it is my go-to cable now for multi-hour listening sessions. This AKG's sound can be too bright at times for my ear - but this cable tames the treble nicely without sacrificing clarity.

Noticeable and definite sound improvement over the stock AKG cable. Adds a well-defined depth of sound in the bass region providing a nice body and weight without sounding too heavy, mushy, or bloated. Tames the lower treble region on this AKG headphone that can be troublesome for my ears.

Excellent build quality on this cable - very solid value for the money - a good investment!

I purchased the BD V2 as a replacement cable for Senns HD800 stock cable used with Roksan Caspian M2 balanced CD player and Senn HDVA 600 balanced amp - as many people have already commented the HD800's can be a little fatiguing with extended listening due to the bright nature of the headphones, I also found the bass a little lack lustre.

M.r Baird took the time to reply to my queries re: sound characteristics of the Black Dragon cable and I must say, I am impressed. I have only logged 10 hours or so listening with the Black Dragon replacement cable so far but already I notice the treble is more bearable with no loss of detail & also the bass is a little fuller without sounding too "wooly".

Additionally, the cable is seemingly well constructed and also arrived in good time from US to UK in under a week, UK buyers note VAT is payable on delivery so add approx a few $ to your order. Thank you, Moon Audio (Posted on 2/6/2015)

I was looking for an improvement to my LCD-X, Burson Conductor & Mac Mini system and a number of reviews recommended the Black Dragon V2 headphone cable.

Drew's write up describing the tone of the LCD-X with the Black Dragon was exactly what I felt I was wanting, so I gave it a go.

In short I am Impressed, I hoped for a bit of a difference but - What a Difference and exactly along the lines Drew described.

Drew-

I want to officially thank you for doing such an excellent job of re-cabling my AKG K701's with the Black Dragon V2 headphone cable! In combination with the Silver Dragon USB cable from my music server I am now enjoying by far the highest quality sound that I have ever heard from my audio system.

I know that this is certainly not news to you, but I have been continually blown away by this new high standard of sound quality ever since I got the phones back from you. Because of this, I will definitely be recommending Moon Audio whenever the subject of high quality headphone modifications or top flight USB cables are brought up.

I've only had my recabled Black Dragon V2 Beyerdynamic T1's back from Drew for less than a week. I was very happy with the T1's stock and realistically I was hoping at best for a few nice subtle improvements. I was prepared for no improvement at all.
This, to my ears, is a significant upgrade. It's like Beyerdynamic just came out with the T1.5's !!!
Soundstage is a whole new ballgame. Much more nuanced...at times almost atmospheric. More weight and realism to everything.
I've been a drummer for over 40 years...was concerned that the added weight of the Black Dragons on the bottom end might take away from the cymbal dynamics and detail. Drew told me not to worry about it and he was right. With the subtle clean up the Black Dragons did to the T1's treble side there is actually more detail and realism to my ears now. AND the "bottoms" of the drums...Oh My God, closest thing to being behind the drum kit I've ever heard on headphones. Bass and drums are physically palpable. Mids and vocals are gorgeous. I have never felt more connected listening to music !!
Thanks, Drew !!! (Posted on 1/25/2014)
Audeze LCD-2: Black or Silver Dragon? It all depends...Review by Canadian Maestro
Quality

Acquired the BD V2 balanced cable for my LCD-2. Already had the Silver Dragons and found those too bright for my classical recordings, but excellent for single vocals and some rock (Pink Floyd, Queen). Put the BDs through about 60 hrs play-time before critical listening. I used: CDs played back on my Bryston BCD-1 and LCD-2 balanced connected to my BHA-1 head amp.

The BD, as Drew stated, adds a fuller, more rounded sound with increased warmth and bass response, compared to the SD. For many of my classical recordings, such as Bach (Voice and Violin, Hilary Hahn, DG label), Beethoven (Piano Cto #5, Ashkenazy, Vienna PO, DG), and Schutz (Musikalische Exquien, Herreweghe, Mundi CD), the BD tamed the brightness in these recordings, as heard on my LCD-2. Soundstage was excellent, and I could hear the separation of voices and instruments in Bach's "Violin and Voice" CD. On the other hand, for many of my orchestral recordings (e.g. Beethoven Symphonies on CD), I preferred the greater detail and air provided by my SD cable. Instrumental separation in these complex recordings simply needed a cable with more high-end and mid-range detailing, and the SD was it. However....the Black Dragon could still provide decent detailing with added warmth for the strings and brass. Also, I preferred the BD for my female vocal recordings (e.g. Pat Barber, Melody Gardot, Renee Fleming, Barbara Bonney), as it gives added nuance while reducing sibilance. With rock, the BDs kicked butt. hands down (e.g. Mezzanine, Floyd, Dire Straits, Springsteen, Roy Orbison).

So, it's a difficult call. For me, there is no one-cable-does-it-all for all my recordings. But I do give the Black Dragon cable my strongest recommendation as an all-rounder with multiple genres of music. With a SD cable, and LCD-2, I am all set for audio excellence on 'cans!

Service was excellent, as Drew replied to my queries with his usual patience and expertise. (Posted on 10/21/2013)

I'm using Black Dragon with XLR on an Oppo 105, with HD 800's. What limitations I'm hearing seem to now come only from the Oppo -- any harshness from the source is revealed, including whatever the Oppo seems to be doing to it -- and, most CD's aren't so well recorded: I'm hearing the defective wire, maybe, in the original miking of the performances... In reference comparison, DDD SACD's sound very clear, very airy and open. I'm listening mostly to classical symphony and baroque orchestra, piano, and string quartet... also, some film music from the 1930's. One of my tests, and i think it's funny, is a section of The Philadelphia Story, DVD, where Macauley and Tracy are walking through an open wooded park. With the Dragons I can hear the loud squeeking and rattle of the camera following them on rails. The only other setup I've heard this as vividly with is a simple rotary pot connecting Tara Lab high end RCA's to HD 600's. ...Surely, it was thought that that noise would sound in no movie house system of the day. I wonder if it sounds in most DVD home systems? I know it hardly does with the HD800's stock cable, and the Dragons have complete full bass range, which the Tara's and Pots -- passive attenuation -- hadn't. This is the kind of revelation of detail I want in music itself, and if it can give everything on an MGM audio track from 1940, it can give everything from a decent recording of music from the 1930's and 40's... that meaning, for instance, giving the actual sound of a violin or oboe or flute, squeeky or not.

One other test is a recording of Furtwangler 1942 in Stockholm, the Beethoven 9th. Taken from a disc, 78' and maybe aluminium perhaps, there's a great deal of information on that CD if you can get to it. With this system I'm hearing the hall echo and a great deal more of instrumental detail -- really like reading along with the score, so much is revealed.

The Oppo XLR outs have 4.2 vrms and drive the HD800's well. The Oppo headphone amp jack is, sadly, as worthless as any consumer phone-jack solution, and thus the Dragon's with XLR female.

In short, very happy with the Black Dragon V2 headphone cable and Moon-Audio. (Posted on 6/17/2013)
Black Dragon V2 Headphone Cable - Good with T1, but incredible with LCD 2Review by Kiat
Quality

Value
I ordered the Black Dragon cable for my T1 (modified with mini XLR connectors) and LCD 2. Drew was great in correspondence: timely, succinct and incisive. I was thinking about the Blue Dragon and Silver Dragon after reading about them in Head Fi. Drew recommended the Black Dragon. I decided to get one terminated with the 4 pin balanced end, plus an adaptor back to 1/4" single end.

On the T1, it added even greater resolution and sound stage to a headphone which is already very well equipped considering that the stock cable is one of the best around. The instruments are all very well spaced out now. Even the vocals are now nicely ever so slightly to the right now instead of being congested smack in the middle of the sound stage. Very commendable!

However, on the LCD 2, OMG! The oft-repeated complaint about the LCD 2 is the soundstage is collapsed and the trebles are rolled off. Well, with the Black Dragon, the LCD 2 comes within touching distance of the T1 in terms of sound stage (the latter with stock cable), which is something I never thought I'd say about the Audezes. More impressive is what it does to the mids: they become less recessed and smooth as butter. The details I can now hear on my LCD 2 ensures that it will give my HD800 and T1 a run for the money as my go to headphone. And the smooth mids mean that I will no longer refer to my HifiMan HE 500 as the sweet ortho. Let's not forget the fantastic Audeze bass: it is now more precise. If the LCD 2 was already toe tapping musical, it has now been elevated one level up. Even for legacy jazz recordings like Sinatra, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, and if you like the warmth of the LCD 2, you get the best of both worlds - good clarity and detail alongside the warm forgiving nature of the Audeze sound. It is so good that I am now asking myself if I should really bother to plonk down the money for the LCD 3 which I thought was the complete Audeze because of the clear neutral mids, extended treble while maintaining a tight bass. With the Black Dragon, the LCD 2 comes very very close.

The Black Dragon does good things with the T1, but it is gobsmacking incredible with the LCD 2. For the former, it is a good match. For the latter, it has effected a transformation!

All that remains for me to say is: Thank you Drew!

Incredible Sound with HE-6 Compared to Cardas ClearReview by MK
Quality
Price
Value
The Black Dragon (BG) with Ferutech XLRs with a single ended jumper is amazing with the HE-6 and is hands down better than the Cardas Clear headphone cable.

Here's why. The Black Dragon headphone cable has a very wide sound field with deep articulate, textured bass and all instruments have their own space with lots of air around the instrument.

Cardas has a reduced sound field and here's the deal breaker. Instruments are not in there own space. They sound smeared together. Unacceptable for classical. On the good side, Cardas is a bit more forward and the bass is a bit more reverberant so it sounds more weighty with jazz.

This comparison really opened my ears to the natural, accurate and just plain gorgeous sound from the Black Dragon. Also, the Black Dragon bests the stock OOC cable for the HE-6 by revealing more low end frequency and texture and increasing the size of the sound field. Incredible cable for the HE-6!! My system is a Bryston Digital Music Player and DAC with a Violectric V200 amp. All cables (power & balanced interconnects) are Wireworld Platinum except for a Hologram D on the DAC. While Moon Audio identifies a number of headphones that the Black Dragon can improve, I would add the DT 1350 to that list! I was gifted the headphones and after living with the stock cable for a while i sent them to Moon Audio to mod them with the Black Dragon, following Drew's advice. Immediately the cable filled in all the so-called weaknesses (i.e. some thinness) while accentuating its strengths. In short the cable improved the treble, fills out the mids and accentuates the DT1350 bass. The sound staging also improves with better instrument positioning and wider sound stage. It also added analogue warmth to the DT 1350, taking care of the clinical sound criticisms I've seen online.

Additionally, the service at Moon Audio is OUTSTANDING! Drew works with you to make sure that the product meets your needs (even when there may be something else that increases his bottom-line more).

I love the Black Dragon for my DT1350, but which ever cable you buy from Moon Audio for your audio needs, it will a good purchase. I highly recommend Mood Audio and the Black Dragon! (Posted on 5/17/2012)

The HD800s had some searing and piercing highs that could make them intolerable sometimes, even though they had great staging, tonality, and texture. The Moon Black Dragon V2 I have beautifully, miraculously deals with all that while preserving all the intense resolution, macro and micro soundstaging, and precise imaging an layering of the 800s. It is a must-have cable for the 800s. The Black Dragon achieves the holy grail of audiophile sound for the HD800s. Now my 800s are my favorite phones absolutely, substantially ahead of Audeze LCD3s, Grado PS1000s, Beyer T1s, Denon 7000s, and more. I feel I don't even need my speaker-based system anymore. The Black Dragon also adds some sort of "integrity" to the sound, with the images more grounded instead of some blobs floating in space. A vocal sounds like a real person of full height, not just a pinpoint voice. There is just a perfect balance of ease and excitement now with the Black Dragon, I feel like I just don't want to change a thing. If you have HD800s, you really have to try this cable. It is a real bargain, too. Thanks Drew, for a real masterpiece. (Posted on 3/28/2012)
The ideal HD800 cableReview by KJ

First of all, thanks for Drew's patience: I originally took his advice, then questioned it and ended up ordering all three cables (including the Blue and Silver Dragons) to try with my HD800 before figuring out for myself that he was right to begin with. So thanks, and apologies for the run-around!

The HD800's stock cable is terrible: it has somewhat curtailed upper octaves which bring forward a weird peak in the treble that everyone can hear. The bass region is also weak, leaving the sound akin to pricking my eardrums with a needle. I'm here to tell you that IT'S THE CABLE'S FAULT! Every single replacement HD800 cable I've tried doesn't have that treble peak.

My HD800s are driven by the excellent Grace M903 amp, both as a USB digital source and as an analog amp for my Graham Slee phono preamp. This pairing is very neutral but not bright or harsh: in fact I find the M903 + HD800 quite musical and even analog, but still extremely revealing of cable differences. In this rig, the ALO Reference 16 cable had the widest dynamics -- in fact, it sounded outright louder, if you can believe it -- and had the greatest upper octave extension. I would say the PFO article was accurate: it really is an exciting-sounding cable and takes the HD800's strengths to the max. You'd think this is a negative thing, given the HD800's propensity for "speed," but really it is quite exhilarating, if not strictly accurate.

With the M903, the HD800 cabled by Stefan AudioArt's Endorphin cabling had the highest transparent, and also sported a very natural tonal balance particularly with acoustic instruments (classical in particular) and female voices which it brings forward. In addition, it has the widest soundstage of all the cables I tried, and the most powerful bass impact. I really fell in love with this cable with the above genres, and deeply respect the cable. However, in ameliorating some of the HD800's faults the Endorphins tilt the sound balance a bit too far towards the rich end of the spectrum, for my tastes. Over the long run, I also felt it lacked some ambiance and air which was especially obvious in comparison to the Black Dragon and ALO cables.

We come now to the Black Dragon. This one just sounds right. It doesn't zip like the ALO Reference 16, nor does it swath you in chocolate velvet like the SAA Endorphins, but combines some of their best qualities in a thin, flexible, and tough package. It has some of the zing of the ALO, but reins it in to keep me from having high blood pressure. It has quite a bit of the oomph of the Endorphins as well as the flatter midrange/upper-midrange, but adds back the treble air. Despite it not having quite the transparency and soundstaging of the Endorphins, nor the pyrotechnic dynamics of the ALO cables, it provides me with greater overall satisfaction by simply having the most natural overall tonal balance.

For the price, unbeatable! I am so happy to have tried the Black Dragons and will soon be acquiring one for my aged HD600 as well. Thanks again, Drew! (Posted on 2/27/2012)

Just the cable my 325is needed prior to being magnum-i-zed. Not only did I get the chance to talk to "the" man from the company, but he was more than helpful in dealing with my noob-ness. I highly recommend this company, my cable was expertly crafted, so it looks as good as it sounds, and now I don't have to purchase an extension :) (Posted on 1/23/2012)

I finally purchased the Black Dragon for my HiFiMan HE 5LE and it was the right thing to do. It's like having new headphones.
Previously I had tried home brewed Cardas and some silver/copper cables which both had a positive effect on the sound but not as definite and positive an effect as the Black Dragon.
It is expensive. Expensive enough to make me apprehensive but it is a solid purchase that makes me even happier with my headphones and amps.
Shipping was quick. Moon-Audio is about a two hour drive from me. UPS shipping got it to me next day. (Posted on 1/20/2012)
