Description

Details

This cable is warmer in nature than our Silver Dragon V3 headphone cable. It is extremely smooth sounding with great low end and wonderful voicing. It is not a laid back lush or dark sounding cable.

It smooths out the top end making it a little less analytical and a little more natural sounding. It also adds bottom end weight to the lower frequencies and provides a fuller sound and wider soundstage.

The difference between the Standard Black Dragon and the Premium Black Dragon are the connectors used on each end and a harder to work with higher silver yield solder. The wire is identical. When you are trying to squeeze out every last percentage point of performance, the Premium version makes sense. The Furutech Top Line connectors are quite simply the best made. And every point of signal saturation will make a difference. Is there a night and day difference between the sound quality of the standard and premium? No. Is the Premium the best of the best? Yes. These cables are meant for the cream of the crop headphones where every little thing makes a difference in terms of bring you closer to audio nirvana.

Most stock headphone cables are made of poor ultra thin conductors that work as a bottle neck for the sound but the Black Dragon V2 cable uses 4 x 21.5AWG Teflon insulated stranded conductors using pure single crystallized UP-OCC pure copper with 7N purity 99.99998%.  Yes, you will be able to hear and see the difference in our hand-crafted cables!

Each conductor is made up of a special varying size stranding geometry. The copper stranding is mixed with Kevlar stranding to reinforce the conductor. Making it stronger overall and less prone to failure due to the harsh constant flexing a headphone cable receives.  The conductors are then surrounded by cotton and then a layer of Teflon tape.  This V2 version is now also shielded and placed in a polyethylene jacket for further protection.

For the Black Dragon V2 Premium HD800 version, we are using the Furutech CF-H800 connector. Furutech’s beautifully finished, beautiful sounding CF-H800 connectors are the result of meticulous engineering and careful audition of various suitable materials. The CF-H800 features an α (Alpha) phosphor bronze conductor and Nylon+Fiberglass 15% insulation for minimal impedance and a nonmagnetic stainless and carbon fiber finished main body and nonmagnetic stainless end ring for superior damping. The Pins are Nonmagnetic Rhodium-plated α (Alpha) Phosphor bronze conductors.

The wire is soldered to the connector with high quality silver solder. The default 1/4" Plug is the new Furutech CF-763. Furutech’s beautifully finished, beautiful sounding CF-763 connectors are the result of meticulous engineering and careful audition of various suitable materials. The CF-763 features an Nonmagnetic Rhodium-plated α (Alpha) phosphor bronze conductor and Fluoropolymer insulation for minimal impedance and a nonmagnetic stainless and carbon fiber finished housing for superior damping.

For XLR connections there are 2 choices. The FP-601M(R) XLR which uses a Beryllium copper and phosphor bronze α (Alpha) Conductor: the body is a Copper alloy with PVDF Fluoropolymer insulation. The second choice is the top of the line CF-601M(R)XLR which utilizes an α (Alpha) Beryllium copper and phosphor bronze Rhodium-plated Conductor with Carbon fiber and nonmagnetic stainless steel housing. The Body is PVDF Fluoropolymer insulation with a Specially designed cable strain relief.

"The Black Dragon and Silver Dragon cables…brought me closer to the music…closer to what I hear in live performances…The air and separation of the musicians and instruments were more noticeable. Vocals became crisper and the transparency increased. I could hear better tonality with the instruments...I forgot about the cables and just enjoyed the music."

Just what the doctor ordered for HD800Review by ToddC

I bought the Black Dragon Premium V2 balanced cable in an attempt to tame the notorious treble peak on my HD800 headphones. The black Dragon Premium V2 is very successful in fixing this problem without having to mod your headphones. It ends up being much more listenable for long periods of time than the stock cables, albeit with a slight loss of 3-d imaging compared to the stock cables.

This is a very acceptable tradeoff for the HD-800 in my opinion. Highly recommended!

An AddendumReview by Christopher M.

An addendum to my previous review: one of the major differences between the standard and premium Black Dragons I failed to note is that recordings of lesser quality are far more enjoyable with the premium. With the standard, I couldn't enjoy anything less than 24 bit 48khz (of course, this is system dependent, so I'm not claiming my experience, in this respect, will be yours)--preferably at least 96khz, but ideally 192khz. The premium is much more forgiving: 44khz is thoroughly pleasant. All recording qualities sound better in most respects, but I'm intrigued by the lower quality recordings. In part, the difference is attributable to the improved imaging. If you have a lot of lower quality recordings, like CDs, the premium is definitively the way to go. There's a certain something to the premium with rhodium/carbon fiber Furutech connectors--I wouldn't go so far as to say the premium Black Dragon consistently creates a 3-D image: most of it occurs along a forward arc from ear to ear, and in the center of your head (that's kind of 3-D, I guess). But I'll have occasional moments of listening when pieces of the music seem to come from below, above, or even from behind. (Posted on 2/16/2017)
Premium vs. RegularReview by Christopher M.

I had a Black Dragon v. 2 w/stock HD-800 connectors and a gold-plated Furutech 1/4" and upgraded to the Premium. There are significant audio differences between the fairly standard Black Dragon v.2 I had and the Premium version with all Furutech Rhodium connectors. First, the sub- and mid- bass is a bit less pronounced with the Rhodium, as is the entire treble range. The Premium really has gorgeous mids and a good upper bass. I'm not such a purist that I refuse to use a good EQ (otherwise I'd go mad with each and every equipment upgrade): what I look for in a good equipment upgrade isn't a different frequency profile (I mean, I avoid frequency profiles for which I can't compensate)--i.e., swapping treble for bass, or mids for both--which inevitably happens with every single upgrade. I'm more interested in treble and bass extension, in the quality of the sound produced, the level of detail without a harsh treble, and in the imaging and soundstage. I don't hear any added treble extension in the Premium, and there may even be a bit less bass extension, but where the Premium really trounces the regular Black Dragon is in three areas: First, the level of detail is greater even as the treble is less pronounced, which is really astonishing. Second, the soundstage is even wider. Third, and most importantly, the imaging is just staggering. That's what the Black Dragon v.2 does best, in my opinion, and the Premium does it far, far better.

Other notes: the cable is beautiful and tangle-free. Customer service is first rate. If you own HD-800s, this should be your first cable of choice: it augments the headphones' best features (soundstage, imaging), and reduces or eliminates its flaws (weak bass, sibilant treble). By comparison, it makes the stock HD-800 cable seem like it was made by a toy company, and it's better than any other cable I've tried. (Posted on 2/16/2017)
Excellent Service and ProductReview by Beginner

I bought a few cables from this shop recently. Their service and products are phenomenal!

I order headphone cables for my new Sennheisier H800S to pair with HDVD 800 amp. With their cables, it brings out the best of the sound quality. Bass are tight with clarity along with very clear high frequency sound as well.

I listen to some of the high definition classical music with different type of cables. Clearly, their products are the winner. Although the price is a little on the high side to my standard but they are my best audio equipment investment thus far. (Posted on 7/29/2016)

These cables enhanced lower frequencies and mid range in a more detailed and dynamic way. Noticed top end improvements in resolution too.

I'm using a custom, high end solid state headphone amp with Mac Book Pro and Audio nirvarna as source.

The Cable is very attractive and resists tangling well.

Great group of folks over at Moon Audio. I recommend these cables to anyone considering. (Posted on 6/12/2016)
A great sounding cable and probably the best to pair with the HD800sReview by SennOwner

This cable gave the HD800s a boost in the lower frequencies. Not at the expense of anything. It does not mud the sound at all as some other cables may do. You get a well defined bass that you can hear clearly and that is very pleasant to your ears.

A powerful bass has never been and was never intended to be this can's main focus. But If your ears would appreciate a bit more bass then this is a very good choice.

The overall resolution and imaging also improved, compared to the stock cable. It tamed the treble a bit as well. Not nearly to the point of the HD800s getting dark, just to a level where they are more comfortable to listen to. Listening fatigue is never a problem with this cable paired with the Senns.

It simply is a great fit with this headphone, and another great sounding cable from Moon Audio.

Thank you, Drew! (Posted on 2/10/2016)
Great Improvements to the HD800Review by SoundSeeker21

This cable greatly improved the bass bringing it to a more enjoyable level. This did not overemphasize the bass, instead it made it noticeable in songs where bass is present. This makes listening to EDM and pop on the HD800s much more enjoyable. However, I noticed that the soundstage seemed a bit more closed in than with the stock cable, that may just be my experience with the specific amp I am using.

The previously rare sibilance of the HD800s is now gone with this cable. Overall, if you are looking to make the HD800 headphones less fatiguing and more enjoyable to listen to with genres such as Pop, EDM, Dubstep, etc., then this cable is a must have. (Posted on 7/20/2015)

The guys at moon audio did a great job getting me exactly what I needed for my HD 800. I wanted to upgrade my stock cables, after a connection was broken on them. They made me a 1/4 and 2.5 mm for my balanced out on my new AK-240, everything is perfect ,haven't spent a lot of time listening yet, but what little I have heard, I am very happy with and, I also got my AK-240 from moon and they were very fast on shipping. Thx Moon.... (Posted on 3/15/2014)
