Hot Take: Not every hi-fi component needs a display screen. As the hi-fi landscape evolves, so do our tastes, and I've started to notice a shift where performance and quality are equated with fancy features and unique builds. Sure, high-quality chips and internal components are still a part of the equation. But if we're judging by looks alone, the fancier unit with a huge screen and an array of buttons inevitably wins out over the plain, muted component that looks like something out of a '90s hi-fi catalog. But what if bigger isn't always better? What if you're paying for features you'll never actually use?
TEAC is one of the few manufacturers that doesn't chase consumer trends to entice potential customers. Instead, they stick with the tried-and-true designs that have built their stable reputation over the last 50++ years. Their products showcase value through sheer performance–not bold designs.
The NT-507T stands out as the component that doesn't need a display screen to prove it's highly capable. And honestly, that's for the better. For a few more hundred dollars, TEAC could've easily slapped a screen across the NT-507T's front panel, but with that comes its own host of problems. Every internal component in a unit contributes to the system's overall performance, both positively and sometimes negatively. An LED or OLED screen can introduce noise, which requires manufacturers to include additional filtration elements and componentry to mitigate it.
So rather than adding in those extra components and raising the price to account for it, TEAC avoided the unnecessary addition entirely. Plus, when you're controlling the entire component with a phone, tablet, or computer, how useful is that display screen? So don't get caught up in the status quo when it comes to audiophile gear. No one notices the tiny features when incredible sonic performance is taking place.
The NT-507T follows TEAC's design aesthetic with a small form factor, aluminum top panel, and isolation feet. Available in two finishes, black and silver, you get the flexibility to choose which color fits best in your existing hi-fi system. TEAC Audio does a great job of creating appropriately sized components. Rather than designing the 507T to be large and in charge, they kept the footprint small. Small enough to fit in an equipment rack, place on a bookshelf, or stow it away in the corner of your crowded desktop.
On the front panel, you'll find a power switch, a USB-C port, six light indicators for the current status of MQA, USB, RJ45, SFP, Wi-Fi, and Roon Ready, and three playback buttons for pause/play and track skipping. And for the purists trying to squeeze out every last morsel of performance and really dial in, there's even a switch to turn those front panel lights on and off. Everything you need and nothing you don't.
Because the NT-507T is a dedicated digital network transport, that means you won't find any analog outputs on the back panel. What you will find, though, is everything you need for pure digital excellence: an SFP optical input, an Ethernet RJ45 port, two USB-A ports, a power port, a LAN selector switch for switching between Wi-Fi and SFP/RJ45, a Roon Only switch, and two ports for connecting the Wi-Fi antennas.
The SFP optical input is an awesome feature that many high-end components don't have. The USB-A drive output allows for direct connection to flash drives, HDDs, or SSDs, enabling the 507T to serve as a simple music server (NAS Audio Source), while the USB-A DAC output supports DSD 22.5MHz and PCM 768kHz/32-bit formats with the external DAC of your choice.
Sound
The small form factor of the TEAC NT-507T was truly appreciated when it was time to set up and configure the components at my desk. My workspace is generously sized, but between the piles of papers (a writer's Achilles heel), desktop speakers, and standing desk attachment, there's not much left to work with. Fortunately, I was able to place the NT-507T to the left of my computer and put the iFi Audio Valkyrie DAC Headphone Amp right on top, connecting the whole system with Dragon Audio Cables.
To control your listening experience, there are several options, but three stand out: Roon, the dedicated TEAC App, and the Esoteric Sound Stream App. The NT-507T also integrates smoothly with OpenHome-compatible apps such as TEAC HR Streamer. If you decide to use that app, the USB volume function lets you control the volume of connected USB DACs or preamps directly from the app.
For my testing session, I used Roon wirelessly, switching "Roon Ready" to the on position on the back panel and accessing the software through an iPad. With the Meze Audio STRADA Headphones plugged into the Valkyrie's 3.5mm headphone output, I queued up Oliver Tree's latest album "Ugly is Beautiful" and pressed play.
As far as the actual sound quality goes, a lot of that comes down to the DAC and headphone's you're pairing it with, but what I can tell you is this. I had no problems using the NT-507T with Roon and Qobuz on my iPad. Qobuz Connect worked like a dream without a single hiccup during my entire listening session. The NT-507T's network engine is exceptional at delivering that digital data in a timely fashion with accuracy. Intricate tracks with rendered with great detail. The track "Love Me" by The 1975 has this switching moment in the chorus where an electric guitar bounces between the left and right channel. The NT-507T captured that moment vividly and accurately.
