Reshape the landscape of your listening experience with the NT-1, Matrix Audio's dedicated hi-fi digital audio transport designed for audiophiles in pursuit of perfection. Rather than doing multiple things well, the NT-1 has one sole purpose: to retrieve, clock, and deliver digital audio to your DAC or amplifier with the lowest possible noise floor and the highest possible precision. Built on the same proven streaming hardware platform as the M series and running the MA player OS, the NT-1 brings a modern, expansive source stage to any existing hi-fi system. Connect it to your DAC, pair it with the MA Remote App, and your entire streaming library–local or cloud, lossless or hi-res–is handled with the care it deserves.
What separates the NT-1 from other dedicated music streamers is the technical rigor behind the signal path. A full linear power supply built around a 60W toroidal transformer powers every stage independently, with separate windings for the digital processing core and the USB DAC interface. Multiple dedicated LDOs regulate clean, stable voltage to each circuit in isolation, keeping the noise floor vanishingly low across the board. The clock system operates in both internal femtosecond and external clock input modes, with phase-synchronized output when paired with an external reference like the Matrix Audio SC-1 Audio Grade Clock. The result is a transport that doesn't just move data; it delivers it with the timing stability and signal integrity that high-end downstream components deserve.
Streaming Without Limits
As the network streaming transport in your setup, the NT-1 integrates natively with TIDAL, Qobuz, HIGHRESAUDIO, and internet radio via Radio Paradise, vTuner, and more. If that's not enough, the NT-1 also supports Roon Ready, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, Audirvana, QPlay. QQMusic, and UPnP/DLNA. Whether your source is a PCM stream or a native DSD file, the NT-1 passes it downstream without alteration, preserving every bit of resolution your recording holds. Whatever platform or protocol your listening life is built around, it fits. Whatever platform or protocol your listening life is built around, it fits.
Your Music Library, your Way
For the audiophile with a vast digital music collection, the NT-1 serves as a hub with the ability to mount a NAS drive directly to the device, connect cloud storage, such as Baidu Netdisk, or install an NVMe SSD in the dedicated NVMe SSD slot on the bottom panel for onboard capacity. Rip CDs directly to that internal storage using a connected CD player or USB optical drive, with the NT-1 handling CD ripping automatically and organizing the results in your local library. Each SSD runs on its own independently powered, ultra-low-noise supply via dedicated LDOs; it's quieter than any standard PC environment. Via SMB protocol, the NT-1 can also serve its stored library to other streamers on your network, functioning as a NAS in its own right.
The NT-1 features smart wake up, waking up automatically when local or streaming playback begins, and trigger output lets its power up your DAC or amplifier in sequence. Trigger control output lets it power up your DAC or amplifier in sequence, meaning no manual switching, no missed steps. It's a transport that fits clearly into a system and behaves like it was always part of one.
A Clock System from the Flagship
With dual clock modes, the NT-1's clock system is built for precision. In internal mode, a femtosecond clock drives the RF synthesizer for a highly stable, ultra-low-phase-noise audio clock output. In external mode, an incoming clock signal becomes the reference, with the synthesizer outputting a phase-synchronized clock of equal precision. Paired with the Matrix Audio SC-1 Audio Grade Clock, the NT-1's performance ceiling rises further–and the soundstage it feeds your downstream components become wider, deeper, and more precisely resolved.
Pure USB Transmission with Multiple Digital Outputs
While the Matrix Audio NT-1 doesn't have a built-in DAC, the USB DAC interface is worth raving about. Dual USB 3.0 ports provide flexible connectivity for external drives, CD ripping, or other USB-supported components, while the dedicated DAC output features full electrical isolation; ground is separated from the device chassis with dedicated noise optimization on the transmission path. It's powered by its own independent winding from the toroidal transformer, completely isolated from the digital supply. Noise introduced at the USB stage is one of the most common weak points in a transport chain; the NT-1 addresses it at both the electrical and power supply level, keeping the noise floor at its absolute minimum for both PCM and DSD transmission.
Optica, coaxial, AES/EBU, and IIS-LVDS outputs cover every connection type your DAC or amplifier might require. For active speakers with digital inputs, the NT-1's digital volume control removes the need for a separate speaker controller.
The NT-1's expandable SFP module lets you add optical fiber or additional Ethernet ports as your setup requires. When paired with a Matrix Audio audio-grade network switch, like the SS-1 Pro, the connection becomes more stable and optimized specifically for Hi-Fi streaming demands.
FAQs
Do I need to already own a DAC to use the NT-1?
Yes. The NT-1 is a dedicated streaming transport, meaning it outputs a digital audio signal rather than an analog one. Because the NT-1 does not have a built-in internal DAC, you will need an external DAC downstream to convert the signal for your amplifier or active speakers. If you're looking for a single device that handles streaming, conversion, and headphone or speaker output in one box, the Matrix Audio TS-1 may be the better starting point.
What's the difference between internal and external clock modes?
In internal clock mode, the NT-1 uses its onboard femtosecond clock to serve as the timing reference. External clock mode goes further: it accepts an incoming clock signal from an external master clock and phase-synchronizes its output to it, which tightens the relationship between the transport and any other clocked component in the chain.
