Some headphones are built to be heard. The ARTA is built to be inhabited. Meze Audio set out to answer one question–what still stands between the listener and the music?–and the result is a flagship that doesn't sound like a pair of headphones at all, but like a room full of live sound wrapped around you. Bass carries genuine weight, instruments settle into distinct positions across a wide, three-dimensional soundstage, and the overall presentation expands well beyond the confines of your ears. First unveiled at High End Vienna 2026, the ARTA has quickly become a point of conversation among audiophiles searching for the next reference standard.
The ARTA's materials tell the same story: precision metals, carbon fiber, and leather, each one premium, each one purposeful. The circumaural ear cups are wrapped in a genuine leather headband and premium ear pads, engineered for hours of critical listening without fatigue. Every visible detail signals the same intent as the engineering underneath, where nothing is accidental, and nothing is disposable–a design ethos led by acoustic engineer Alex Grigoras, whose team pursued Art Nouveau elegance without sacrificing technical rigor. The ARTA Planar Magnetic Headphones are Meze Audio's most ambitious statement yet on what a reference headphone can be.
Dragon Cable Recommendation: For listeners looking to extract even more resolution and air from the MZ5 HΩ driver, the Silver Dragon Premium Headphone Cable is our recommended pairing — its pure silver conductors are built to complement the ARTA's high-impedance design, sharpening transient detail and widening the soundstage even further.
The Transducer That Redefines the Headphone Space
At the heart of the ARTA is the Rinaro MZ5 HΩ–a high-impedance planar magnetic driver and Isodynamic Hybrid Array Driver, representing the highest-impedance planar magnetic headphone driver built to date. Rinaro Isodynamics has been at the forefront of planar magnetic technology for over 40 years. With a state-of-the-art R&D and manufacturing facility in Ukraine, Rinaro developed the Isodynamic® Hybrid Array technology, featured in the Empyrean, Elite, LIRIC, Meze Audio POET, and ARTA headphones.
The MZ5 HΩ breaks from the low-voltage, high-current approach used in most planar designs. Instead, it runs high-voltage, low-current operation, which delivers markedly better electrical linearity and signal purity across the full audible range while generating less heat and less stress on the diaphragm–translating into low distortion and less dynamic compression, even at demanding volumes.
Inside the driver itself, the planar trace has been redesigned to be 2.5 times longer while occupying a cross-section 2.8 times smaller, spreading electromagnetic drive more evenly across the membrane. The payoff is a highly consistent response both on- and off-axis, with the membrane moving as a single unified surface — preserving transient detail and keeping distortion exceptionally low.
Amplifier Synergy
Because of its high-impedance design, the ARTA is far less sensitive to variations in amplifier output impedance, so its intended warm-neutral tuning holds steady across tube and solid-state amplifiers alike. That said, these headphones are a pure window into your entire signal chain: the subtle warmth of a tube amplifier, the precision of a high-end solid-state desktop amplification setup, all faithfully reflected. For the discerning listener, this is an invitation to explore, experiment, and make the sound truly their own.
The Grille That Gets Out of the Way
The ARTA's open-back grille is built from angled acoustic blades that protect the driver without compromising sound quality. The geometry is engineered specifically around the MZ5 HΩ driver, ensuring the enclosure never limits the transducer's performance. By diffusing rear-wave energy and reducing internal reflections, the blades support cleaner transients and a more open, natural presentation overall.
Choose Your Flavor of Sound
The ARTA is available with two earpad configurations, each tuned for a different sonic flavor:
Duo Angled — a blend of perforated lambskin leather and Alcantara®, angled for a richer, more impactful sound.
Slim Alcantara — dual Alcantara® construction with inner-chamber perforation, tuned for greater neutrality and a smoother upper register.
What's Included
Every ARTA ships with two 2-meter cables built from silver-plated Linear Crystal Oxygen-Free Copper (LC-OFC) conductors, each in a dual-strand configuration with 161 individual conductors per strand. Both are insulated in SoftFlex PVC for flexibility and comfort and housed in CNC-anodized aluminum connectors — one terminated in a 6.3mm single-ended jack, the other in a 4-pin XLR balanced connector, covering single-ended and balanced setups out of the box. The modular cable design also means upgraded aftermarket cables can be swapped in without hassle.
Engineered for Generations, Not Trends
The ARTA is designed for decades, not seasons. It's fully serviceable–every component from earpads and the headband to the drivers and earcups can be fully disassembled, serviced, or replaced, so a headphone at this level never becomes waste; instead it's meant to age and appreciate. Design and assembly happen entirely in-house at Meze's headquarters in Baia Mare, Romania, where the team combines trained acoustic judgment with meticulous build quality control on every unit that leaves the facility.
FAQs
How does the ARTA compare to the Meze Empyrean and Meze Audio Elite?
The Meze Audio ARTA sits above both models in Meze's lineup as the new flagship tier rather than a replacement for either. All three share Meze's open-back architecture and Rinaro Isodynamics partnership, but the ARTA introduces a new 225-ohm high-impedance planar driver built to reward higher-end amplification.
Sonically, the ARTA stands out for its detail retrieval, resolution, and natural warmth. It's got the clarity and nuance of the Elite with the warmth and richness of the Empyrean II. Where the first-generation Empyrean was warm-but-muddy, and the Elite fixed that without losing musicality, the ARTA layers in even more resolution and space on top for a true speaker-like presentation.
Do I need a separate amplifier to drive the ARTA?
Yes. Because of the ARTA's high-impedance design, while it's less picky about amp pairing than many planar headphones, it does benefit from the addition of a capable amplifier. When paired with a high-end headphone amplifier, the ARTA's full dynamic range and resolution are unlocked.
Can I upgrade or replace the cable later?
Yes. While the ARTA comes with two headphone cables, Moon Audio offers upgraded cable options at checkout.
