Meet the ÆON CORE, a closed-back planar magnetic headphone and the direct successor to the beloved AEON 2 closed back model. This isn't just an update. Dan Clark Audio went back to the drawing board on the driver, the tuning, and even the look, giving the ÆON CORE an all-new aluminum-and-wood aesthetic that's as striking as what's happening inside. It's also the first Dan Clark Audio headphone voiced to a revised Harman over-ear target developed through research with Dr. Sean Olive, meaning the science behind what you hear has been rethought from the ground up. Design
The Dan Clark Audio AEON CORE Headphones blend the historic design of the AEON series with the qualities of the Dan Clark Audio E3 Headphones–same ovoid ear cup shape but with the E3's headband suspension system. A striking aluminum-and-wood aesthetic with both dark and light gray accents gives the AEON CORE an industrial yet minimalist look, and the build quality feels every bit as solid as headphones well above its price point. It's a bold look when stacked up next to the existing AEON models, but a welcome change nonetheless.
The unique travel-friendly folding design of the previous AEON models was its trademark. Easy to stow away in your backpack or carry with one hand, but constant manipulation like that–no matter how ingenious the design–can degrade the hardware's lifespan much more quickly. Only a handful of users ever reported any problems, but the AEON CORE ditches that design. The headband no longer collapses onto the ear cups. It's still just as ergonomic with folding gimbals and a self-adjusting headband suspension system that provides the perfect fit as soon as you slip them on your head.
Dan Clark Audio has always scored high in the comfort category, and the AEON CORE is yet another example of that at work. Despite the headband's lack of padding, that suspension system makes the AEON CORE feel weightless on your head. That, combined with the generously padded ear pads, makes for a comfortable listening experience and solid passive noise isolation for a closed-back design. I enjoyed several hours with no fatigue.
Now, when it comes to what's included with the AEON CORE, you might be a bit surprised to learn there's no case–because there almost always has been–but there's a clear reason for it. Dan Clark worked very hard to create an affordable headphone that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg to enjoy high-fidelity sound. To reduce manufacturing costs as much as possible, some cuts had to be made, and DCA was not going to compromise performance to include one additional accessory. If I had to choose between a case and vital technology, I'd pick the technology. You can still purchase an AEON case directly from Dan Clark Audio's website if you like, but what you do get is a cable, and a thoughtfully designed one at that.
There's nothing worse than buying a pair of headphones only for them to arrive with a cable termination that doesn't work for half the gear you intended to use. Dan Clark Audio has eliminated that frustration by allowing customers to choose the termination of the included DUMMER cable at checkout. Choose between a 1/4"-3.5mm, 4-pin XLR, or 4.4mm. Also included with the AEON CORE is a microfiber cleaning cloth, a velvet bag to store the headphones (or cable) in, and a quick user guide.
Sound
Dan Clark Audio has always had a particularly strong emphasis on tuning. It's been the inspiration behind some of their top proprietary technologies and has shaped the company's sound signature: natural, lifelike, and smooth. While the HARMAN Target Curve has always been considered when designing previous headphones, the AEON CORE stands out as the headphone that follows it practically to a T, and that's no easy task.
You can't talk about the "HARMAN Target Curve" without including "Dr. Sean Olive" somewhere in there. He's HARMAN's pioneer. The driving force behind HARMAN's most influential audio innovations, including the HARMAN Sound Curve, aka HARMAN Target Curve. So when Dan Clark says his published research with Sean Olive shaped the tuning of the AEON CORE, you pay attention.
To make a long story short, when HARMAN developed the HARMAN curve, they used a proprietary set of ears called Welty Ears, fabricated specifically for the GRAS measurement fixture that perfectly mimicked the natural ear shape. They released the curve, and every audiophile and audio professional making measurements at home–most likely using GRAS Acoustics microphones and ears–got different results. Not because their measurements were wrong, but because they weren't using the Welty Ears HARMAN used. It was an unexpected error that HARMAN couldn't have predicted.
Well, Dan Clark noticed this and approached Sean Olive, who had already been exploring ways to rectify this situation, and the two got together to form a solution. Several measurements and a few mathematical equations later, the pair co-published a research study with several custom curves for the public to use.
Having secured a pair of the original Welty ears used to make that HARMAN Curve, Dan Clark started measuring and accurately mapping each pair of their headphones, and that's just what he did with the AEON CORE. Those ears came in handy when Dan Clark noticed that the AEON CORE's high-frequency performance needed some extra attention. So with some tuning, he was able to make subtle tweaks and changes that they might not have been able to do before. The result was a high-frequency response that was free of peaks and dips with the upper midrange in particular sounding clean and free of glare.
Sonically, the AEON CORE encompasses Dan Clark Audio's signature sound with an incredibly balanced, lifelike listening experience. Midrange vocals are natural and emotive, while the low-end bass response is articulate and punchy. Dan Clark does an excellent job of engineering headphones that get out of the way of the music and let a track speak for itself. They're natural, detailed, and suitable mates for many genres. Despite being a closed-back headphone, the AEON CORE feels incredibly open. Another clever skill mastered by DCA: the ability to pass a closed-back headphone as an open-back.
If you're a fan of Dan Clark Audio's sound signature, falling in love with the AEON CORE will be easy. And if you're new to Dan Clark Audio headphones and don't know where to start, the AEON CORE is the perfect place to land your feet. It's balanced without feeling boring, never too sharp on the top-end, or too flat in the lows. Detail-oriented listeners will enjoy the intricate layering of instruments and vocals, while those who prefer getting lost in a passage will bask in the faithful, yet seductive midrange.
The AEON CORE has been sonically compared to the Dan Clark Audio STEALTH Headphones, and that makes sense when you discover that the curve of both headphones is almost identical. So with a couple thousand dollars leftover in your pocket and no AMTS technology, you could own the STEALTH's cousin. I won't go as far as to call it a baby STEALTH, because the STEALTH is a flagship that deserves to sit in its own category, but the two headphones certainly complement each other. The STEALTH has a sonic leg up on the AEON CORE with a more detailed, vivid sound quality.
While the AEON CORE is one of the easier headphones in their lineup to drive–significantly easier than the Dan Clark Audio Stealth–it still benefits from capable amplification, be it from a headphone amplifier, DAP, or DAC/Amp combo. Historically, their headphones also benefit from a burn-in period, and the AEON CORE is no different.

The AEON CORE Headphones feature a newly designed driver engineered for maximum efficiency and low distortion. The high-efficiency planar magnetic driver has been designed to work with lower-power electronics, ideally 125mW or more at 16 ohms, though in practice, DCA says it can be even lower. Dan Clark has a habit of keeping their tech specs under wraps, so I can't tell you much more about the driver, but I can tell you that it is indeed far easier to drive than previous models.
AMTS technology has become one of Dan Clark Audio's cornerstone technologies, so many were surprised to discover the AEON CORE didn't feature AMTS. In fact, it's the first headphone since the STEALTH that hasn't used AMTS. In a recent interview with Dan Clark, Head-Fi.org Founder and Editor Jude Mansilia asked the question on everyone's mind, "Why no AMTS in the AEON CORE?" And Dan Clark's answer made perfect sense.
While AMTS has its place and it does a great job of opening up the soundstage, the AEON CORE was designed as a reference-grade headphone under $1,000. AMTS is one of the company's more expensive technologies to produce and employ, and had they included it, the AEON CORE would have breached the sub $1K price point. Dan Clark Audio deployed a combination of diffusion and absorption technologies that smoothed the high-frequency response to levels comparable to what AMTS achieves–without the cost and complexity associated with the AMTS part.

The Dan Clark Audio AEON CORE Headphones aren't just another iteration in the AEON series. Calling it a successor to the AEON 2 would be a complete undersell, because while it might be a different headphone wearing a familiar name on paper, it's a testament to Dan Clark's passion for producing a pure, authentic listening experience. The AEON CORE doesn't silo itself into one corner as the headphone delivering big, bold bass, lush mids, or micro details. Instead, it follows the HARMAN Curve practically to a T to deliver you an accurate sound quality with no harsh peaks or unwanted dips. You get a bit of everything, done just right.
Despite not featuring the AMTS technology featured in some of Dan Clark's mid-range headphones, the AEON CORE delivers a level of sonic performance typically found in headphones twice the price, but here, it's under a thousand dollars.
