Studio-Quality Sound Meets Wireless Freedom
I'll be the first one to tell you I like wireless headphones, so much so that I own a pair of the Sony WH-1000XM5 Noise-Canceling Headphones myself, and I've converted every member of my family too. It's hard to beat the convenience of wireless headphones and if you're going to get any pair of wireless cans–let it be a Sony.
Every audiophile knows the sinking feeling that comes with a new product announcement–that moment when you wonder if your recent purchase has suddenly become yesterday's technology. When Sony unveiled the WH-1000XM6 Wireless Noise-Canceling Headphones, I experienced that familiar ping of buyer's remorse, having just invested in the XM5s. But after spending extensive time with Sony's latest flagship wireless headphone, I can confidently say that this isn't just another incremental update.
The WH-1000XM6 represents a fundamental leap forward in wireless audio, born from a collaboration with world-renowned mastering engineers from Sterling Sound, Coast Mastering, and Battery Studios. Delivering what they boldly call "Studio-Quality Sound" in a package that doesn't just compete with audiophile-grade wired headphones–it challenges them. With advancements in sound quality, internal technology, design, and user experience, the WH-1000XM6 Headphones are Sony's most impressive feat yet.

Design
When I first heard the WH-1000XM6 was coming out and saw a quick picture, I thought to myself, "What could be different between the WH-1000XM5 and XM6?" I had just purchased the XM5's and I got the same feeling I get every time Apple releases a new iPhone. If you're an iPhone user, you know exactly what I'm talking about. "Are my headphones now obsolete?" I wondered. "Should I have waited for the XM6?"
Much like Ford's launch of the new Mustang bodystyle in 2013, the WH-1000XM5 Headphones were completely redesigned from the look of previous generations, sporting a more modern, minimalist aesthetic. The XM6 expands on that minimalist look with subtle design changes in the headphone's form factor, fit, and comfort.
What's New
The WH-1000XM6 takes an entirely new form factor than previous generations with a wider headband, rounder ear cups, and a folding design. Hinges at the end of each sliding arm on the headband allow you to fold the headphones up, making it easier to carry and tote around. Sony has positioned the ear cups on the XM6 to point inward more than the XM5, while still retaining the ability to lie flat when placed on a surface.
The headband is wider and flatter than the previous one, but the amount of cushioning and adjustment capability remains the same. The ear pads feel plusher, but it's unclear whether the material used is different. With a rounder ear cup, Sony has eliminated the seam running down the edge of the XM5 and has upgraded the power/Bluetooth pairing button to be round and slightly recessed. Functionality remains the same with the left ear cup housing the power button, 3.5mm headphone jack, and the NC/AMB button. On the right ear cup is the USB-C port. The touch controls are still housed on the right ear cup.
The XM6 still sports Sony's signature matte finish available in black, silver, and midnight blue, but with the addition of a fingerprint-resistant coating. This is a great design choice because man, oh man, the XM5 is a fingerprint magnet!
Fit and comfort-wise, I don't have much of anything to complain about. They're snug enough to fit nicely without being too tight, and there's plenty of cushioning on the ear pads and headband. Wearing them around my neck when I wasn't listening isn't the comfiest, but it's no different with the XM5. The XM6 comes with the essential accessories: A hardshell carrying case, a 3.5mm headphone cable, and a USB-A to USB-C charging cable. Customers can choose from three color finishes: Black, Platinum Silver, and Midnight Blue.
Carrying Case
Sony has made several design improvements to the included hardshell carrying case. The once zippered, low-profile case is now rounder and slightly thicker with a magnetic clasp closure. The inside of the case features a built-in recessed compartment for the included case with a fabric netting holding it tightly in place; compared to the flap-style compartment on the XM5 case.
Most notable is the improvement in how the headphones are stored. The XM6 features a hinge mechanism on both ear cups that allows it to fold up and fit into the case easily. This is the same mechanical design as the WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise-Canceling Headphones.
In my opinion, there are advantages and disadvantages to the carrying case design. Here's my case:
The XM5 Headphones were my ultimate travel companion on a recent international trip. As I schlepped from one airport to the next, I toted the carrying case in one hand and my luggage in the other. I had no qualms doing so because the case is hard-shelled and features a zipper closure. With the removal of the zipper on the XM6 case, I can't say I'd take the same risk. While the case is still hard-shelled, the magnetic closure isn't as secure, so I wouldn't dare gamble the headphone's slipping out and hitting the ground as I pushed through crowds. The flip side, however, is that you don't have to worry about the zipper breaking–a problem my sibling faced with the XM5.
The XM6's built-in compartment for the cable is much better than the XM5's flap-style closure, but the XM6 headphones don't sit as recessed in the case as the XM5's. At this point, I'm being highly critical of a carrying case, but it's just my initial observations. If this were a review solely about the case, then sure, my remarks are notable, but we're accessing the headphones as a whole–so take this with a grain of salt.
Sound
When it comes to warm and musical sound quality, Sony is an expert. Sony wireless headphones and earbuds are known for their signature "V-shaped" sound quality. Listeners enjoy a fun, lively sound that boosts low and high frequencies while slightly dipping in the midrange. The Sony tuning is great for many genres, and the previous generations are perfect examples of that signature sound at work. The WH-1000XM6 is slightly different than its siblings with a sound quality that Sony labels as "Studio-Quality Sound" as it was co-created with world-renowned mastering engineers.
The XM6's sound quality was developed in collaboration with mastering engineers from Sterling Sound, Coast Mastering, and Battery Studios. With the highly trained ears of audio professionals, Sony has crafted a wireless headphone whose sound quality rivals that of audiophile-grade wired headphones. WHAT?! Yes, I said it. The sound quality of these otherwise consumer-grade headphones is impressive, so much so that it could easily go head to head with some audiophile headphones around the same price point. Is it going to sound as good as a $1k headphone? No. But it surely doesn't belong in the same category as its rivals, Bose, JBL, Beats, and so on.
So, what does "Studio-Quality Sound" sound like?
The WH-1000XM6 strikes an impressive balance between musicality and dynamics, and clarity and precision. As someone who owns the WH-1000XM5, I've got a keen understanding of their sound, and the two headphones are as similar as they are different. The XM6 retains the visceral bass response that's impactful and bold, but it's more poised and perfected. Times when the bass was almost overwhelming and bloated on the XM5, it was sharper and more accurate on the XM6.
In essence, the WH-1000XM6 is the refined, controlled, and polished version of the XM5. Where the XM5 was great, the XM6 is AWESOME. It's evident from the moment I slipped them on and started listening to some of the artists headlining at Gov Ball 2025 this weekend. Vocals are breathtakingly clear and present. When the mid-bass and sub-bass slammed, they didn't have to fight for space to be heard. Incredibly busy passages with a mixture of synthesizers, percussion, and strings weren't congested.
Taylor Swift's song Florida is a great example of a dynamic song. One second, the song is tame and muted with the sweet, silky voice of Florence & The Machine gliding through my ear canals. As the hypnosis of Florence Welch's voice starts to take you away, BOOM, the impactful sound of slamming drums is barging through. Taylor Swift never ceases to impress me with her whimsical melodies that change at the drop of a hat, and the XM6 handled each twist and every turn like an F1 car at the first turn. It's fast, controlled, and accurate.
The XM6's attention to detail and clarity is another impressive achievement made by the Sony team (and mastering engineers). Somehow It's Been A Rough Day (Live at Blue Note Tokyo) was introduced to me during a visit by dCS at our headquarters. Up in the demo room, we indulged in the sonic luxury of an endgame system featuring dCS components and the Focal Sopra Loudspeakers. The best part of this composition happens in the first 10 seconds, and if you're not discerning enough, you'll miss it. What's the best part? The myriad of clapping, utensils clacking, and waiters shuffling around the Blue Note Tokyo Jazz Club before the first note is played by Ai Kuwabara on the piano. It's one of those mundane things that most people wouldn't even notice, but to us audiophiles, it's everything.
Listening to this song in my car, at my house, or on my Apple AirPods doesn't do those tiny details justice–but the WH-1000XM6 does. The nuance and micro details were clear and present, much like they were in the demo room that day. It's those tiny details and nuance that keep us audiophiles hooked, and when a technically "consumer-grade" headphone that's wireless at that, can pluck those elements out, I'm more than impressed.
The Sony WH-1000XM6 Wireless Headphones are a treasure among the trove of wireless headphones. They deliver an immersive listening experience that places you right in the middle of the action, while maintaining the depth, width, and soundstage needed for classical, jazz, and acoustic songs. It's the full package. Never fatiguing. Always musical, dynamic, and detailed. And never lacking in character. Bouncing between EDM, pop, indie, punk, and hip-hop, I was hard-pressed to find a genre these headphones didn't complement. With and without the ANC activated, I enjoyed a listening experience that would please the likes of an audiophile, music lover, and everyone in between.
The input of the mastering engineers is evident, from the nuance and detail retrieval down to the precision, accuracy, and stereo imaging that only a professionally trained ear could achieve.
