Coreless Direct Drive Motor Achieving Stable Rotation
The SL-1200GME/1210GME features a coreless direct-drive motor that eliminates cogging for smooth rotation. Its twin-rotor construction maintains high torque while reducing bearing load and minute vibrations. The coil mounting base uses the same reinforcement pattern as the Reference Class SL-1000R/SP-10R for enhanced rigidity.
Vibration Resistance Design
Three-layered Turntable Platter
The turntable has a three-layered construction with a rigidly combined brass and aluminium die-cast platter. With a deadening rubber covering its entire rear surface to eliminate unnecessary resonance, thereby achieving high rigidity and vibration damping. This delivers smooth rotational stability and inertial mass surpassing the SP-10MK2, the direct-drive turntable standard used by broadcast stations worldwide, as well as having more than twice the inertial mass of the SL-1200MK5.
High-Level Balance Adjustment
When the weight distribution of the turntable is uneven, excess vibration or noise occurs during rotation, which causes degradation in sound quality. Therefore, the balance of the turntable is adjusted at the factory by using specialized high-precision balance adjustment equipment for each and every item after the turntable is assembled. Turntables that have undergone adjustment are labelled with a sticker reading "BALANCED" to indicate that adjustment has been done.
Four-Layered Cabinet Construction
A hairline-processed, 10-mm-thick top panel of immaculate aluminum has been added to the previous three-layered construction of aluminum die-cast, BMC, and heavyweight-class rubber on the SL-1200MK5. This four-layered construction combines high rigidity with a high-quality finish and feel.
Insulator
A newly developed zinc insulator using αGEL™ gelatinous material with excellent shock absorption, providing high vibration damping and minimizing feedback.
Tonearm
The tonearm uses lightweight magnesium with cold drawing for high precision. High initial-motion sensitivity is achieved through Technics’ gimbal suspension construction and high-precision bearings.

High Precision From Build Quality to Performance
The year was 1972. Disco was on the rise and vinyl was spinning faster than ever. Technics had just announced its newest direct-drive turntable, the SL-1200, and every vinyl lover and professional DJ was dying to get their hands on it. Fast forward 50-some-odd years later to today and not much has changed.
The cult-like following around the SL-1200 Turntable prompted Technics to produce a turntable based on that design that suited today's audiophile, where digital is the mainstream. Thus enters the Technics SL-1200G/1210G Turntable–a turntable built on the pursuit of high-precision craftsmanship.
The Technics SL-1200G/1210G Turntable is the top-of-the-line, mac-daddy unit in the company's Grand Class line, outperforming even the more accessible SL-1200GR and SL-1500C models. For clarity, Technics has two variants of the SL-1200G Turntable–the SL-1200G-S and the SL-1210G-K. The difference? The SL-1200G-S is the silver model and the SL-1210G-K is the black model. Other than the color, there is no functional difference between these two direct drive turntable systems.

Behind every Technics turntable is a group of skilled craftsmen who pour their heart and soul into every last piece of a component. With Technics turntables, as you go up the line and price increases, you get higher-quality materials, more advanced technology, and so on. As the most expensive turntable in the Grand Class line, the SL-1200G/1210G sports some of Technics' premium design features. Let's break it down.
The SL-1200G/1210G has your standard start-stop button, power knob, speed selector buttons, and manual arm-heigh adjuster on the tonearm. What makes this turntable more premium over its less expensive mates is the inclusion of "DJ-styled" features like an EP record adapter, strobe light, and pitch slider. While many users may never need the precision pitch control that made the original DJ turntable so famous, it's a nod to the heritage of the legendary SL-1200mk2 (or mkii as it was often known.)

As you know, this turntable is available in two finishes: SL-1200G-S in silver and SL-1210G-K in Black. Both are equally as striking, stylish, and priced the same. Technics uses a special silicon rubber for the feet, providing long-term reliability and high-vibration damping characteristics that outperform many belt drive alternatives. Vibration through the bottom of the feet is absorbed by reinforcement with cylindrical tubes using microcell polymers. These parts are newly developed special insulators with a structure to fit in the zinc-diecast housing, which has a high specific weight. Additionally, the installation section of the insulators is equipped with a horizontal adjustment mechanism using screws, which eliminates the rattle that occurs when the turntable is installed in a rack and prevents unwanted vibration.
For I/O, the SL-1200G/1210G uses brass-milled, gold-plated terminals for the phono output terminals and phono earth terminal. Additionally, the AC input terminals are detachable and the power cord can be upgraded. Connecting this record player to your existing audio setup is easy, with accessibility features that make operation intuitive for users of all experience levels.
Four-layered Cabinet Construction
Technics elevates the build quality of the SL-1200G/1210G Turntable with an added layer to its traditional three-layered cabinet construction. A hairline-processed, 10mm thick top panel of aluminum makes up the fourth layer of this four-layered cabinet construction–composed of the aluminum die-cast, BMC, and heavyweight-class rubber–for high rigidity and a high-quality finish. The aluminum top panel helps improve vibration resistance and increase rigidity. Technics goes the extra mile by individually cutting and hairline polishing each aluminum panel, a step that not only improves the performance of the body but also provides a finish with a highly elegant sensation for long-term enjoyment.
Tonearm with High-tracking Performance
The tonearm is made of lightweight magnesium, known for its excellent sound-damping characteristics, and uses Technics gimbal suspension construction at the bearing section. This tonearm design offers high initial-motion sensitivity and accurate groove-tracking performance.
As you know, not every record is perfect, especially if you're sourcing vintage gems. They can have warps and eccentricities that affect the sound quality negatively. But with a properly fitted turntable like the SL-1200G/1210G you can experience exceptional sound quality–even from a record with warps and scratches. How? The high initial-motion sensitivity tonearm will recognize those eccentricities and blow right past them, tracking almost anything so you don't experience any sonic deficiencies.
Three-layered Turntable Platter
The SL-1200G/1210G's platter is constructed with three layers of different materials–aluminum diecast, bass, and deadening rubber for high rigidity and superb vibration-damping characteristics.
The entire design of the SL-1200G/1210G is ultra-premium. I was incredibly impressed with the tonearm's performance, especially how precise the cueing lever was. I always get nervous trying to place the needle down perfectly when I'm picking a track in the middle of the record. Even if I missed the start of the song by just a hair, the tonearm would glide over to the starting point without as much of a jump or skip. This is a high-precision turntable from the tonearm and beautiful dust cover down to the illuminated strobe light and intentionally-designed isolation feet.
Sound
Precision and accuracy–two defining words of a Technics Turntable. Technics puts a lot of love in their products, going the extra mile to ensure they are free of internal vibrations, noise, and external interference.
Like most high-end audiophile brands, Technics Turntables have a signature sound. Generally speaking, they're characterized as accurate with subtle nuances and brilliance. Now this will change ever so slightly depending on the model, but it's a good representation of what you can expect from a Technics turntable.

Because the SL-1200G/1210G doesn't come with a pre-installed cartridge there's a lot of flexibility in how it can sound right out of the box. If you want a richer sound you can easily add a cartridge like the Ortofon Concorde Music Bronze. Another great option I'll quickly plug is Grado Phono Cartridges. Today they're known mostly for their headphones, but they got their start building phono cartridges by hand in the 1950s and not much has changed since then! Grado uses Australian Jarrah wood for the three phono cartridges we carry, which lends an organic sound that's precise and clear. Through a variation of thermal aging processes, the housing gains the ability to better dampen and control the resonant frequencies.
We're spoiled with a huge vinyl collection in our demo room so it's not hard to find tracks to test. The sound quality of analog is natural, authentic, and clear, and with a good-quality recording, it's nothing short of exceptional. To accurately judge the sound quality of a turntable you've got to consider the entire setup, from the tonearm, cartridge, and preamp to the turntable itself.
First on the playback list was Bob Marley and the Wailer's album "Legend." I've developed a love for reggae and man oh man does Bob Marley do it right. Get Up Stand Up resonates with its powerful opening call to action, and the SL-1200G/1210G presented those initial vocals, "Get up, stand up. Stand up for your right," with remarkable clarity and authority.
The SL-1200G/1210G excels at revealing nuanced details that might otherwise go unnoticed. While listening to Marley's One Love–a track I've heard countless times before–I was surprised to hear delicate percussion instruments (possibly a cymbal, shaker, or triangle) subtly in the chorus. Reflecting on the times I listened to it digitally, I realized I never paid much attention to anything beyond the guitars, piano, and drums. These minute background elements became prominent and hard to ignore through the SL-1200G/1210G. Not because they were exaggerated, but because the turntable's remarkable resolution brought these living, breathing details into perfect focus within the musical landscape.
The SL-1200G/1210G Turntable's distinction lies in its exceptional dynamic range. Whether I was listening to reggae, complex jazz, psychedelic rock, or nuanced classical compositions, the SL-1200G/1210G handled volume shifts with remarkable precision and ease. During my listening sessions, I moved freely between The Beatles, Bob Marley, and various jazz quartets, experiencing each with stunning clarity.
The SL-1200G/1210G revealed hidden dimensions in The Beatles' "Rubber Soul" album, bringing a tangible warmth to both vocals and instrumentation that digital formats simply can't capture. My first encounter with the song In My Life was on Qobuz–a remastered version that, while musically rich and vibrant, lacked the organic imperfections that give analog recordings their soul.
Experiencing the same track on the SL-1200G/1210G was like stepping through a time machine. What had been a track digitally polished to near perfection, now beamed with raw authenticity and analog fullness. The turntable strikes an impressive balance, delivering technical precision while still honoring the natural character of the original recordings.

Twin Rotor Coreless Direct Drive Motor
The SL-1200G/1210G Turntable uses Technics' Coreless Direct Drive Motor with no iron core, eliminating uneven rotation known as cogging. This motor offers exceptionally high performance with an audiophile-grade signal-to-noise ratio, rotational accuracy, and powerful torque.
The twin-rotor construction reduces the bearing load while maintaining high torque and also reduces minute vibration during rotations. The addition of Blu-ray Disc technology for rotation control further enhances the performance and precision of this direct drive motor.
High-level Balance Adjustment
To eliminate the possibility of uneven weight distribution on the turntable once you get it home and set up, Technics uses specialized high-precision balance adjustment equipment to adjust the balance of the turntable before it leaves the factory. Why does this matter? Uneven weight distribution can cause excess vibration or noise during rotation, which degrades the sound quality and nobody wants that.
The SL-1200G-S and SL-1210G-K will come with a sticker reading "BALANCED" on it upon arrival, and if for any reason your turntable becomes out of balance, Technics has a three-year parts and labor warranty, so I imagine you could get it fixed.
Magnesium Tonearm Traces the Vinyl Surface with High Precision
Technics employs magnesium for the S-shaped tonearm, which is lighter in weight and has superior damping characteristics. For support, the tonearm uses Technics traditional gimbal suspension construction in which the axial cores of the horizontal rotation axis and the vertical rotation axis intersect at a single point. And if that's not enough, the tonearm also uses high-precision bearings with a cut-processed housing.
The tonearm's high initial sensitivity of 5mg or less is achieved through manual assembly and adjustment by skilled Japanese artisans. Grooves etched in your favorite record are tracked accurately without interruption.
The height of the tonearm can be adjusted up to 6mm according to cartridge or turntable mat changes. The base portion of the tonearm uses extra-hard brass with six sets of embedded screw grooves for adjustment. Those six grooves support the tonearm and effectively eliminate rattle.
For those with a collection of cartridges, the SL-1200G/1210G comes with two different auxiliary weights–large and small. A balance weight supports cartridge masses of 5.6 to 12g, allowing cartridges of 10 to 16.4g to be supported with the small auxiliary weight, and cartridges of 14.3 to 19.8g with the large auxiliary weight.
