The Rolls-Royce of headphone amplifiers.
Exuding exemplary build quality and unrivalled specification, the iCAN Phantom delivers an exceptional listening experience, expertly engineered to drive everything from high-performance IEMs to demanding electrostatics.
The Rolls-Royce of flagships
The iCAN PHANTOM’s design gives the appearance of two units but in fact it is a single, dual-level device, the full depth of which is fully utilised by its multi-layer circuit design. Its enclosure is sturdily constructed from aluminium, with the bottom layer sporting cable connections front and back, and the top layer offering tactile controls and a colourful OLED display.
Electrostatically good!
The iCAN PHANTOM incorporates our original standalone iESL energiser technology with regular amplifier technology to make a single amplifier that can handle every headphone type with aplomb. All users benefit as the component quality and clever circuit design required to deliver such a high level of performance with electrostatic headphones elevates the amp’s performance with other headphone types too.
Bias voltage simplified
The iCAN PHANTOM has a series of data cards that specify different bias voltages (these are supplied with the amp). Simply select the card that matches the headphone’s specification and pop it in the card slot – there are cards for 500V, 540V 580V, 600V, 620V and 640V each with a handy guide on the back showing which headphone brand is compatible with that voltage.
iFi Nexis – network connected control
The iCAN PHANTOM is the first product to incorporate iFi Nexis, a module which combines with an app to provide a comprehensive, scalable network-connected control system. The features that Nexis offers will grow over time. At launch, the Nexis app enables your Android or iOS device to act as a ‘super remote control’ for the iCAN PHANTOM, providing access to additional features not accessible via the amp’s fascia or standard remote control.
Every connection covered
The iCAN PHANTOM supplies a wide array of balanced and single-ended connection options. The headphone outputs are at the front, with the source inputs and preamp outputs at the rear.
A tale of two input stages
The iCAN PHANTOM sports two input stages – one valve/tube-based, the other solid state – enabling the user to switch between the two in real time. It is, indeed, like having three amplifiers in one, each with a different sonic presentation.
The GE5670 valves have an expected lifespan of around 10,000+ hours of use. When the time eventually comes to replace them, the iCAN PHANTOM’s smoked glass panel is easily removed to provide access, meaning the job can be completed in minutes.

Outgrown Your Headphone Amp? Meet the Last One You'll Ever Need
Every audiophile with a serious headphone collection has faced the same problem in their journey. You've got a solid headphone amplifier that gets the job done, driving most, but not all, headphones. Your small, curated collection has quickly turned into a stash of IEMs and headphones of varying impedances, and before you even realized it, you've outgrown the limits of a single headphone amplifier. The unit you bought for dynamic headphones and IEMs is barely powerful enough to drive your latest pair of planar cans. What began as a pursuit of perfection has turned into an unnecessarily complicated, expensive mess.
So the question arises: do you buy another headphone amplifier for just those pesky few pairs of cans, or do you give up while you're ahead?
The iFi Audio iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 Hybrid Tube & Electrostatic Headphone Amplifier was created to end that compromise. It's the reference headphone amplifier you buy now and use forever–regardless of what's in your collection. With the ability to drive IEMs, dynamic headphones, planar magnetic, and even pesky electrostatics, it's one of the few designs on the market capable of driving virtually every headphone in existence. And I know what you're thinking: "every headphone in existence" is a bold claim to make, but iFi Audio doesn't say it lightly, and after spending time with the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5, I see what they mean.
PROS
- Drives virtually any headphone and IEM including electrostatics
- Three distinct sound signatures from three amp modes (solid-state and tube)
- Doubles as a preamp in 2-channel systems
CONS
- Volume auto-restore feature can't be disabled; Technical Support is proposing adding an option to turn this feature on or off
Design
Physically, the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 and the first-generation iCAN PHANTOM bear a striking resemblance. Lifting the PHANTOM 1.5 out of the box, I was met with a durable, solidly built unit. I've always admired the iCAN PHANTOM for its unique design, emulating what you'd think are two separate components stacked on top of each other. Peer into the glass top panel and you get an inside look at the internal circuitry. The warm red glow of the NOS GE5670 tubes radiates in the top right corner–a subtle detail that makes the overall experience magical.
Another cleverly magical moment happens when you turn the unit on and off. Press the power button on the left and watch the volume wheel on the right glow green as the unit warms up. Once on, the volume wheel auto-attenuates to its last setting and drops back down to zero when the unit's turned off. A quick note: you cannot disable this function, so be mindful of where the volume's set before you turn the device off. I'd recommend making a habit of turning it to zero when you're done listening to avoid bursting your eardrums the next time you plug in a pair of cans. iFi Audio has confirmed that the technical support team is proposing adding an option to turn this feature on or off. As of the date of publication, no confirmed update or timeline has been set yet.
As for the PHANTOM 1.5's overall build quality and design, iFi added an anti-fingerprint treatment to the chassis to keep the top panel's smoked glass looking pristine. The front panel received a slight cosmetic upgrade with subtle changes to the text and spacing between output ports. Speaking of which, everything you need to control the PHANTOM 1.5 is accessible directly on the front panel, either through the physical buttons or display screen menus. Cycle between two electrostatic headphone outputs, one for custom/pro and one for normal, a pair of balanced 3-pin XLR L/R outputs which double as stereo single-ended 6.3mm jacks, a 3.5mm output, and a balanced 4.4mm output. The six bias memory cards cleverly hidden on the back panel slide into a dedicated slot on the front with an independent ESL power button for electrostatic headphones.
On the back panel, you'll find a suite of inputs and outputs: one pair of 3-pin XLR inputs, 3 pairs of RCA analog inputs, one pair of 3-pin XLR outputs, one pair of RCA outputs, and a DC 12V-15V power input for the included power supply. You've got everything you need to use the PHANTOM 1.5 as a headphone amplifier for personal listening or as a preamplifier in a 2-channel system. The bias memory cards are stored directly above the back panel connections.
There are many features and display screen prompts on the PHANTOM 1.5 that I could dive into, but the real value lies in its sound and amplification. Heat is dispersed beautifully through sinks on the side panels and a uniquely shaped round dome on the top. I had the unit on for about half of my 8-hour workday, and while it got warm, it never got hot. I'd consider that a win.
Sound
I like to think I'm pretty well-versed in setting up and using hi-fi gear, but the PHANTOM 1.5 was my greatest challenge yet. After clearing a spot at my desk, I unboxed the unit, connected it to the iFi Audio iDSD Valkyrie DAC/Headphone Amplifier using our Silver Dragon RCA Interconnects (which are connected to my computer via our Silver Dragon USB Cable), and arranged my headphones and IEMs around it. That part was easy. When it came time to plug in the first pair of headphones, the Audeze CRBN2 Electrostatic Headphones, I froze. I have an embarrassing confession to make. In all my years reviewing gear, I've never used Electrostatic Headphones. In my defense, they're not the most common headphone type on the market, so it wasn't until we got a pair of the CRBN 2s and the PHANTOM 1.5 arrived that the opportunity presented itself.
I'm not one to skip reading the user manual, but it was the end of the workday, and I was in a rush, so I decided to give it a try on my own. I spent 10 minutes searching for the bias memory cards, rummaging through the box, and inspecting the chassis like a hawk. I'd just about given up when I decided it was time to look at the manual, and just as I suspected, the memory cards were hiding in plain sight right under my nose. I'll slap myself on the wrist for not reviewing the manual from the start, and give iFi Audio 5 gold stars for hiding the memory cards so well. Once I located them, I pulled out the 580V card, popped it into the front panel slot, and from that point forward it was smooth sailing.
Before I started listening to the CRBN 2s, my boss, Moon Audio's CEO Drew Baird, P.E., warned me I would fall in love with electrostatics. Well, Drew, you weren't wrong. That's exactly what happened, and I fear you may have to pry these from my hands–just kidding! The CRBN 2s took an ordinary headphone listening experience and transformed it into that of a 2-channel system with dedicated loudspeakers.
Tube+ mode with the CRBN2 was a standout for me. Before I knew it, I had flown through Ariana Grande's Petal album, just bopping along and humming here and there. I wasn't listening intently; I was getting lost in the moment. For me, that's the difference between a good component and a great one. It can pull me out of a moment, whether that's a stressful day at work or R&R after a long week. The unique twang of The 1975's Lead Singer, Matty Healy's voice, was vibrant over the CRBN2s. A song I've heard hundreds of times was brand new.
Listening with the Dan Clark Audio E3 Planar Magnetic Headphones, a moderately hard-to-drive unit, the PHANTOM's power became evident. The E3 has clean, natural production, and at just +12dB gain in solid-state mode, the PHANTOM 1.5 brought the harmonious vocals in California Dreamin' to life. Switching to tube mode, I was met with a richer presentation oozing musicality. I'm a warm and musical listener, so I knew loving the PHANTOM's tube sound would come naturally. The steel drums in Bill Withers' track Just the Two of Us were distinctly bold and round. I caught myself dancing in my chair to the Caribbean melody multiple times during my listening session. The Phantom's tube+ mode pushes the NOS GE5670 tube's warmth even further. The presentation became liquid and lush in the best way possible. Details and image weren't masked by excessive warmth. Bill Withers' vocals became silky smooth, gliding across the track's instruments.
The fact that I enjoyed my entire listening session with the E3 Headphones at a mere 9 on the volume level is a testament to the Phantom's sheer power. But the real test would be how it performs with the Audeze CRBN2 Headphones and a pair of 64 Audio IEMs.
Switching over to the 64 Audio Volür IEMs, I was thrilled to discover that iFi Audio included its iEMatch technology to eliminate background hiss and restore dynamic range. It's not a feature that's always needed, but it's nice to have. Without it enabled, I did hear some audible background hiss without any music playing, but once I enabled -12 dB, it went away. I performed the same order of operations: listen with solid-state, jump to tube, and finish in tube+ mode.
The Volür is a richly musical and bass-forward IEM, so I was curious to see how the PHANTOM 1.5's tubes would alter the sound signature. You've got the included apex modules to adjust the IEM's tonality slightly, but if you're a basshead like me, they're perfect just the way they are. In solid-state mode, the Volürs were quick and full of energy with EDM tracks. The IEM's already powerful presentation wasn't muddied, but accentuated with a quick decay and an energetic punch. Tube mode rounded the snappy synth beat in Ty Dolla $ign's EDM remix of Blasé. Switching over to pop, Ariana Grande's vocals were rich and lush. Tube+ boosted the mid-bass and midrange melodies in Grande's track Freak. After cycling through several of her tracks, I concluded that tube mode was my personal pick here, but that's the great thing about the PHANTOM 1.5. While tube+ mode was almost too lush for Grande's tracks, it was the perfect choice for more neutral and airy presentations like Saturday in the Park by Chicago.
The PHANTOM 1.5's solid-state amplification is powerful, clean, and authentic. It leaves the coloration and warmth to the vacuum tubes. The unit comes equipped with iFi Audio's sound shaping tools, xSpace and xBass, which I didn't even use because it didn't need any extra help. It's perfect just the way it is. The iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 is a formidable force for audiophiles craving flexibility in their setup. With the ability to switch quickly between three distinct amplification modes and enough power to drive everything from sensitive IEMs to notoriously difficult electrostatic headphones, the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 doesn't force you to pick a lane. It puts you in the driver's seat of your listening experience, where you can make as many or as few adjustments as you like.

Three Amplification Modes: You Choose Your Character
It's often said that less is more, and while I agree with that sentiment nine times out of ten, there is an exception to the rule–when vacuum tubes are involved. Ever since I listened to my first tube headphone amplifier, the Moon Audio Dragon Inspire IHA-1, I immediately understood what all the hype was about.
The Phantom 1.5 features not one, not two, but three amplification modes. Rather than asking a track to conform to a singular sonic character, you get to choose what suits it best. A discrete Class A solid-state amplifier delivers speed, control, and articulation, while the all-valve Class A stage built around hand-matched NOS GE5670 vacuum tubes boosts depth, warmth, and fluidity. The third amplifier mode is tube+, which extends the valve's character further, evoking the musicality associated with analog productions. All three modes are instantly selectable at the flick of a switch on the front panel.
Sheer Power & Performance
Arguably, the PHANTOM 1.5's greatest asset is its sheer power. Not just any headphone amplifier can claim to drive electrostatic headphones. Electrostatic cans are notorious for being power-hungry, and most of the gear on the market isn't equipped to handle them. It's a delicate dance to find a dedicated headphone amplifier that's powerful enough for electrostatics, but not so powerful that it ruins your experience with dynamics. The PHANTOM 1.5 is a unicorn: the hybrid headphone amplifier that drives everything in your collection. That's why I've dubbed it the first and last headphone amplifier you'll buy. If you're looking for your first dedicated headphone amplifier and would rather invest smart, then the PHANTOM 1.5 is the logical choice. If you've built your collection and reached the ceiling with your current amp, the PHANTOM 1.5 breaks through that imaginary barrier, giving you ample room to keep growing and exploring new cans.
With 15,000mW peak and 9,000mW RMS of output in balanced mode, the PHANTOM 1.5 provides far more power than you may ever need, which is a great problem to have. You've got six bias cards for electrostatic headphones: 500VDC, 540VDC, 580VDC, 600VDC, 620VDC, 640VDC. Most Electrostatic headphones are comfortable using 580VDC, so you might not even need the extra cards, but hey, you've got them!
Three gain modes–0dB, 12dB, 24dB–allow you to dial in the perfect settings for your headphone collection, with 0dB supporting sensitive IEMs and easy-to-drive over-ear cans. The higher gain settings are a formidable force for any pesky cans in your collection. That pair of planar magnetic headphones you've been eyeing but haven't pulled the trigger on because you didn't have the right unit to drive them? Easily solved with the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5
What's New?
Version 1.5 refines the iCAN PHANTOM's successful platform: controls now move with a smoother, more damped action; anti-fingerprint treatments keep the smoked glass looking pristine; optimised grounding, shielding, and component choices further quieten the signal path and improve operational stability. Updated control software delivers more consistent display behaviour and assured remote responsiveness.

Generally, stock audio cables are manufactured with subpar materials, metals with impurities, poor geometries, and an overabundance of layers to make them look and feel like a fire hose. Inconsistency and lack of quality control in stock cables can lead to poor sound quality and a veiled sound vs. what the musician intended for you to hear and feel from the music. Dragon Audio Cables are handcrafted with the highest standards and made to order according to your specific needs. At Moon Audio, we create a custom cable for you using the highest quality UP-OCC silver or copper conductors that can be manufactured. UP-OCC metals are void of impurities and are optimized for signal transfer and sound quality. Why Dragon Cables?
You’ve heard the saying that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, right? Well, the same applies to your brand new audiophile-grade headphone or other audio components. The weakest link, in this case, is your stock audio cable or the cheap interconnects the manufacturer threw in the box just to get you up and running. Why is the audio cable always an afterthought, when it’s just as important as the rest of your system? At Moon Audio, we use the purest and best raw materials in our cables to unveil your music. We believe that materials matter and your audio cables should have the same care and craftsmanship that manufacturers put into their audio components and headphones. Audio cables are ultimately the connection to your music. The fact remains that cabling is often considered the last priority to that of the main product and a means to cut down the overall production costs. It’s as simple as that. Dragon Cables elevate every note - as if you were hearing your favorite music for the very first time.
Verdict
Consider the iFi Audio iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 Headphone Amplifier your endpoint. It's the last stop in your amplifier journey. The final destination to audio nirvana, handling whatever you throw at it. Whether this is your first headphone amplifier purchase or the last unit you plan to buy, the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 delivers extraordinary sonic results and incredible amplification. It has an innate ability to breathe life into headphones.
What impressed me most is that none of its three amplification modes were distinctly unique. Solid-state is fast, clean, and honest. It gave the 64 Audio Volür's EDM tracks a tight, energetic punch and kept the vocals in California Dreamin' natural and uncolored on the Dan Clark Audio E3. Tube mode rounds the edges and adds body; the steel drums in Just the Two of Us came through bold and round, and I couldn't stop dancing in my chair. Tube+ mode takes it further into lush, liquid territory. With the PHANTOM 1.5 energizing the Audeze CRBN2 Electrostatic Headphones, my desk setup felt less like headphone listening and more like sitting in front of a pair of well-placed loudspeakers. I flew through an entire album without noticing, and that's the highest compliment I can give any component.
Use it as a headphone amplifier or a preamplifier; it's your choice. To get the most out of an amplifier this capable, don't let your cables become the bottleneck and upgrade to one of our Dragon Audio Cables. I ran the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 with our Silver Dragon Premium Interconnect Cable from the iDSD Valkyrie and our Silver Dragon USB Cable from my computer, and the chain stayed clean, open, and detailed from source to headphone.
Is the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 for everyone? If you only own a single pair of easy-to-drive IEMs, it's more amplifier than you need today. But that's exactly the point. Collections grow, tastes change, and the PHANTOM 1.5 is built to keep up, whether your next pair is a sensitive IEM, power-hungry planar, or your first set of electrostatics. Buy it once, pair it with everything in your collection, and get back to what matters: the music.
