The HDB 630 borrows its chassis from Sennheiser's best-selling Momentum 4 Wireless Headphones, which means you're getting a proven, comfortable design right out of the box. I'm a big fan of the Momentum 4s, and while I assumed a Momentum 5 was the next natural evolution in the wireless line, Sennheiser had other plans, unveiling the beauty that is the HDB 630–and honestly, I couldn't be happier.
While the two models retain a very similar design at first glance, there are subtle tweaks and improvements in the HDB 630 that go a long way. The build quality is exceptional–the yokes are sturdy and well-engineered, while the HDB 630's matte black finish is fingerprint-free–no matter how sweaty or greasy your fingers may be when you touch them. The generously sized earpads are made from Japanese Protein Leatherette, sporting a soft, breathable, and durable fit. That same premium Leatherette wraps the headband, creating a cohesive look that's just as comfortable as the ear pads.
At 311 grams (11 oz), the HDB 630 is incredibly comfortable. I was able to wear them for multiple hours at a time and didn't experience ear fatigue, hot, sweaty ears, or a headache from tight clamping. No qualms here when it comes to comfort and fit–these are genuinely built for all-day wear.
Sennheiser deserves a lot of credit for the thought put into making the HDB 630 travel-friendly. They fold flat for travel, come with an included hard-shell carrying case, and are lightweight yet durable enough to withstand heavy use. As a bass lover, I thought I would miss the sub-bass rumble, but to my surprise, I enjoyed the refined bass response more–I could actually hear everything, and I didn't get fatigued. The HDB 630's sub-bass is still deep, but it's punchier than it is visceral and thumpy. The mid-bass, though, is the true star of the show. The low end is present but never overpowering, making these ideal for listeners who don't need a bass boost to enjoy their music.
British indie rock band Glass Animals' song Your Love (Déjà vu) blends hip-hop-inspired beats, tropical synths, and layered vocals to create a hypnotic and hazy feel. You get a flute-like melody with heavy drum kicks and slinky guitar lines–a melody that the HDB 630 handled like a champ. Those mid-bass reproduced the song's percussion perfectly. It was full-bodied and punchy without obscuring vocal detail, and I didn't feel like my brain was going to rattle out of my skull. Moving to Tokyo Drifting, another funky beat by Glass Animals on my playlist, I enjoyed more of that quick and punchy mid-bass.
The HDB 630's new tuning makes ample room for mid-range vocals and detail retrieval to shine. The timbre is natural and accurate, making instruments sound true-to-life. The treble region is balanced with just the perfect amount of air and space that made Lana Del Rey's vocals in Young and Beautiful sound weightless. Her vocals are breathy and ethereal, and the HDB 630 articulated them without any fatigue or harshness. The soundstage is wider than that of the Momentum 4. Instruments have the room to breathe, and individual elements are clearly defined. No one is competing for space and attention here. Classical music lovers will greatly appreciate the wide soundstage and the way the HDB 630 renders orchestral depth. While I can't say this is the ultimate headphone for bass-centric EDM and hip-hop tracks, it is a great choice for vocal-focused genres, acoustic, rock, alternative/indie, country, and folk.
Wrapping up my listening impressions, it's apparent that the Sennheiser HDB 630 Wireless Headphones deliver on their promise of an open and natural sound quality. The lower mids are smooth and even, keeping vocals present and lifelike, while a carefully crafted upper midrange and treble let you hear exactly what the artist intended.
