Flagship Sound for Flagship Phones.
Unlock the power of lossless Bluetooth audio with the UP Play Max. Ultra-compact and portable, it fits seamlessly and discreetly with mobile and desktop devices. Use the built-in mic to take calls or chat in-game. And lose yourself in natural-sounding audio enhanced by K2 Technology. When it’s time to share the moment, use the power of Auracast to transmit to an unlimited number of compatible devices, or connect directly to a second pair of headphones.
With a full suite of codecs, including aptX Lossless for CD-quality audio, the UP Play Max is your all-in-one solution for wireless listening.
Enhanced for Apple.
Every year, smartphones claim to improve the things we see and interact with, yet wireless audio remains held back by outdated Bluetooth technology. Customers invest in flagship smartphones and premium Bluetooth headphones expecting the best possible experience, without realising their devices are still capable of more. Nowhere else is this more apparent than with the iPhone.
Typically limited by Apple’s ageing AAC codec, the UP Play Max unlocks a new world of Bluetooth performance for Apple users. The UP Play Max’s aptX Lossless compatibility opens the door to up to four times the detail in audio from services such as Apple Music, Spotify Lossless, Qobuz, and others.
Your flagship phone deserves flagship sound, and your lossless-compatible Bluetooth DAC deserves better than being held back by outdated Bluetooth technology. It’s time for iPhone users to finally hear what their portable setup can do.
Android, Upgraded.
While the UP Play Max completely overhauls iOS devices, the enhancements to performance and compatibility for Android devices have the potential to be no less transformative. Most Android phones support the LDAC codec, but other codecs vary, and brands often ally with specific codec developers, limiting compatibility for any one device.
With the UP Play Max, you never have to pick a side; a single plug-and-play dongle instantly upgrades your phone’s capabilities, giving you a full range of hi-res codecs so you never have to think about compatibility again.
With CD-quality lossless audio at your fingertips, the UP Play Max offers the ultimate Bluetooth listening experience for any source device. Better yet, for listeners who have stepped into the world of Lossless Bluetooth DACs such as the iDSD GR 2, GO pod Max, or NEO IDSD 3, the full capabilities of your DAC will be unlocked, opening a new level of sonic possibility.
Harmonics, Restored.
Digital masters often lack the warmth and richness of their analogue counterparts, leaving you with sound that’s cold and harsh. K2 Technology restores those missing high frequencies, bringing back natural harmonics and capturing the essence of the original master.
With the UP Play Max, you can enjoy restored, high-quality sound from your CD-quality library – no matter where your journey takes you. Simply activate via the UP Play Max’s integrated page on the iFi Nexis app and get ready to hear what the artist and engineers intended.
"K2 Technology" is a trademark or registered trademark of JVCKENWOOD Corporation.
Bask in the Aura.
The UP Play Max features all-new Auracast compatibility, opening up a whole new world of options for shared listening. In the past, listening to Bluetooth audio together would be limited to two listeners awkwardly sharing half of the experience with an earbud each, a solution so detrimental to audio quality that the end result is even less effective than each listener’s half of the experience.
Auracast solves this problem by offering a quick and effective method for Bluetooth broadcasting to an unlimited number of listeners. Anyone with compatible headphones can join in on the experience, dropping in and dropping out without the need for passwords or pairing.
With a single UP Play Max, you can share the experience with as many people as you like, wherever you are.
Play Together.
For those who may not have Auracast-compatible headphones, the UP Play Max still offers ways to share the connection.
Connect simultaneously and seamlessly to two pairs of headphones or earbuds using the SBC codec, without the struggle of syncing screens or compromised sound. Simply connect, press play, and get lost together in the joy of sharing your favourite music and movies.
Game On.
Bluetooth audio is convenient, but usually comes with latency, which breaks immersion in TV and movies, and can instantly cripple a gaming session. Fortunately, the UP Play Max has the answer.
With its built-in low-latency mode, accessible via the aptX Adaptive codec and activated via the iFi Nexis app, sound and vision are kept perfectly in sync. With the UP Play Max, you can keep your gaming edge and never miss a beat.
Crystal Clear Calls.
Equipped with a microphone at the base, the UP Play Max facilitates crystal-clear phone calls, further enhanced by built-in noise and echo suppression technology from Qualcomm, enabling you to speak hands-free while you head to your next destination.
Whether it’s an urgent business call or in-game chat with friends, the UP Play Max will cut through noise and ensure your voice is heard.
Powered by Nexis.
The UP Play Max is powered by iFi Nexis, our mobile application that unlocks additional features and keeps your device up to date with the latest enhancements.
Access the app to seamlessly control paired devices and active codecs, toggle K2 Technology, Auracast and low-latency mode, and complete OTA updates.
Available on the App Store and Play Store.
iFi GO Bar Kensei Portable DAC/Amp Review: Performance Rivaling Dedicated DAPs
Read Time: Approx. 12 min.
TL;DR:
- Neutral-musical sound signature that rivals portable DAPs costing significantly more
- K2HD technology is the headline feature, enhancing the audio experience for stability
- Enough power (475mW) to drive planars in Turbo Mode, enough finesse (iEMatch) to keep sensitive IEMs dead silent
- Premium Japanese stainless steel build is gorgeous but heavy for a dongle, scratches easily, and drains your phone battery fast
- At $449, the GO Bar Kensei is one of the most feature-packed, best-sounding dongle DACs on the market
iFi Audio’s Latest Portable USB DAC Headphone Amp Packs a Powerful Punch
From the moment it hit the market, the original iFi Audio GO Bar has been a fan favorite for those seeking portability–compact, capable, and surprisingly musical for something the size of a USB stick. So when iFi announced the GO Bar Kensei, I had one question: how do you improve on something that already nailed the formula? Turns out, you rebuild it from the inside out.
The iFi Audio GO Bar Kensei Portable Headphone Amp and digital-to-analog converter expands on the success of the best-selling GO Bar DAC & Headphone Amp with some aesthetic and sonic upgrades. The aluminum alloy chassis on the OG GO Bar has been swapped for a Japanese Stainless Steel chassis that promotes maximum rigidity. A new addition to the GO Bar lineup is K2HD technology–developed by JVCKenwood–making the GO Bar Kensei the world’s first portable DAC Headphone Amplifier combo to incorporate K2HD processing. It also features an ultra-low jitter internal clock and an enhanced power supply.
Audiophiles seeking a compact solution for on-the-go high-resolution listening should look no further than the GO Bar Kensei. With power, features, and technical precision, the GO Bar Kensei is the ultimate hifi portable headphone companion for high-end headphones, IEMs, and earbuds alike. Whether you're familiar with iFi's lineup through the iDSD, the Hip-DAC 3, or the flagship Diablo, the Kensei brings the same commitment to quality down to a pocketable form factor.
PROS
- Built like a tank with stainless steel chassis
- Simple, easy-to-use device with no complicated features and excess buttons
- Powerful enough to drive high-impedance headphones and highly sensitive IEMs
CONS
- No internal battery means it may drain the connected phone or tablet battery quickly
Kensei: An honorary title bestowed upon a Japanese warrior skilled in swordsmanship, a Kensei represents the highest degree of perfection. iFi Audio leaned into this with the design and craftsmanship of the GO Bar Kensei, focusing on purity, balance, and refinement to deliver a listening experience that they say "cuts through the noise of everyday life and reveals the true essence of your music.”
Design
iFi Audio has a knack for making some pretty portable hifi gear. From the GO Blu and the OG Go Bar to the Gold Bar and the Kensei model, you can use their gear virtually anywhere. Unlike the GO Blu, the Kensei is a wired-only device with no Bluetooth connectivity–and that's by design. By keeping the signal path purely digital through its USB-C input, iFi ensures the cleanest possible data transfer without the compression artifacts that wireless protocols introduce.
The first thing you notice when picking up the Kensei is the weight and feel. iFi Audio ditched the aluminum alloy chassis of the original in favor of Japanese Stainless Steel, and the difference is immediate. The material choice lends a level of durability and solidity that just screams premium.
At 2.3 oz and measuring 2.6" x 0.9" x 0.5", you can hold the GO Bar Kensei in one hand while juggling your iced coffee or energy drink and car keys in the other. Pop it in your back pocket. Place it in the front pocket of your favorite button-down. The Kensei's compact size, combined with its uniquely shaped form factor, allows it to blend seamlessly into your lifestyle.
The name "Kensei" references a Japanese master swordsman, and honestly, the craftsmanship lives up to that billing. Every edge, every surface feels intentional.
Operating the Kensei is easy, too. On the left-hand side, you'll find your basic controls: volume control buttons, iEMatch switch for listening with IEMs, and digital filter button for switching between xBass+, XSpace, and K2 HD technology. Flip it over to the top side and use one of the two headphone outputs: balanced 4.4mm and single-ended 3.5mm. And that USB-C port on the bottom? Well, that's the connection point to your smartphone, tablet, or computer.
Don't let the size of the GO Bar Kensei fool you; this pocket-sized DAC/Amp is a powerhouse. The GO Bar Kensei is designed to drive anything from your highly sensitive IEMs to that pesky pair of power-hungry planar magnetic headphones. It delivers up to 477mW output power–10 times more than an iPhone 15, and I've got an iPhone 13, so I can only imagine how much more power it has than that.
The GO Bar Kensei comes with everything you need to start listening right out of the box: a lightning to USB-C cable, a USB-C OTG cable, a USB-C to USB-A dongle adapter, a quick start guide, an instruction card, and a leather travel case. There are no gimmicks here. Just simple, purposeful engineering so you can spend more time listening to music and less time fussing and fighting with features and functions.
Sound
The GO Bar Kensei is built for the audiophile on the go. Whether that means popping in your IEMs or earbuds while on the commuter train or taking a few minutes on your lunch break to catch up on the latest news broadcasts, the Kensei delivers music and audio with authority and ease. It's incredibly powerful for its size. I had no problems using the Kensei with several Campfire Audio IEMs, a pair of Meze Headphones, and the power-hungry Dan Clark Audio E3 Headphones during my listening session. Even notoriously demanding HiFiMan planars felt properly driven in Turbo Mode. What impressed me the most, though, is the Kensei's suite of audio enhancements that enabled me to tailor my experience to individual songs.
The Kensei comes equipped with iFi Audio's XSpace and XBass spatial enhancements, along with four additional digital filters. I'm a bass head, so I found myself coming back to the XBass filter when listening with the E3, whose tonality leans more organic and natural than big and bold. XSpace was great when I listened with IEMs that deliver an "in your head" experience–it opened up the soundstage considerably, creating a sense of width and depth that made the music feel less confined. With XSpace enabled, I was transported to the front row of an amphitheater with Raye singing along to sweet jazz melodies.
The overall sound signature of the GO Bar Kensei is neither overly cold and clinical nor warm and hefty. It's neutral and natural with lifelike musicality that breathes life into your favorite recordings. Vocals come through with a natural intimacy and texture–there's a presence and body to singers and spoken word that feels organic rather than digitally etched. The treble is extended and detailed, giving cymbals shimmer and acoustic guitars a sparkly bite without ever tipping into harshness or fatigue. It prioritizes detail retrieval, power, and efficiency to authentically reproduce music. Compared to a competitor like the iBasso DC Elite, the Kensei trades a touch of analytical precision for that signature iFi musicality — and for most listeners, that's the right trade to make.

K2HD Technology: The iFi GO Bar Kensei DAC/Amp is equipped with K2HD Technology, the latest and highest-resolution version of K2 technology. K2 technology restores music data lost during digitalization, bringing your audio closer to the analog master recording quality. It reproduces your music with richness and natural harmonics, adding an organic quality to the sound.
K2HD technology upscales a file to 192kHz/24-bit and applies hand-selected K2 parameters for waveform correction — Which processes the time-domain, not the frequency domain. Through advanced high-frequency range extension and minute signal (Bit) extension, K2HD technology restores natural harmonics and overtones beyond 22kHz, delivering listeners a sound quality that is close to the original master.
XSpace & XBass+: Designed for high-quality headphones, XSpace delivers a spacious sound field as if one was listening to speakers. XBass+ is designed to add back the loss bass response for a more accurate bass reproduction of the original music.
Four Digital Filters: Four digital filters tailor sonic characteristics according to the song. LED shows which filter is selected
- Bit-Perfect (Blue): No digital filtering for natural tones. Delivers crisp, robust sound, sharp natural tones, and a fuller midrange.
- GTO (White): Recovers inner resolution and music body. Enhances sound details and density.
- Minimum Phase (Yellow): More life-like sound, between BP and STD. Offers slow-roll off with minimal pre and post ringing, slight reverberation and a warmer sound.
- Standard (Red): Taut dynamics with controlled highs.
Two optimized output stages: Turbo Mode (6dB gain boost for power-hungry planar headphones), iEMatch for sensitive IEMs (cuts back background noise and hiss)
Two Balanced Outputs: 4.4mm balanced output with symmetrical twin-channel output stage, 3.5mm balanced output with iFi S-Balanced technology that cuts crosstalk by 50% for the best connectivity

Verdict
At $449, the iFi Audio GO Bar Kensei Headphone Amp DAC isn't just another incremental upgrade–it's a statement filled with next-generation technology that packs a punch. The integration of the K2HD technology alone is impressive, enhancing audio, expanding bandwidth, and correcting waveforms for an error-free listening experience. But take that and combine it with the intentional choice of stainless steel, the enhanced power delivery, and the versatility of its output options, and you've got a feature-packed portable DAC/Amp fit for everyday listening.
And if you're looking to upgrade that stock cable, the Black Dragon USB Cable and Black Dragon Form Fit USB Cable are two great options for stable data transmission. As iFi's newest portable DAC Headphone Amp, the GO Bar Kensei is the perfect choice for the audiophile who wants the latest technology all wrapped up in a small, portable package.
