The Signature Line's Most Approachable Entry Yet
Grado Labs. A hi-fi manufacturer that needs no introduction is making waves again with another exciting release in its Signature Line. At $995, the Signature S550 Headphones are the fourth headphone to join the series alongside the S750, S950, and HP100 SE.
The Signature Line has quickly become one of the most compelling collections in Grado's catalog. Each model builds on the legacy of the Grado house sound while pushing into new sonic territory–smoother, more refined, and more versatile than ever. With the S550, Grado is making a strong case that you don't have to climb to the top of the lineup to get a premium listening experience.
It borrows some of its best qualities from the Signature S950 Headphones–including the stunning Brazilian Walnut housing–while carving out its own identity with a more energetic and dynamic midrange. It's musical, smooth, and engaging while maintaining the immediacy, openness, and detail retrieval that so many audiophiles know and love from Grado.

Design
In a market saturated with manufacturers trying to outperform each other, you've got to have an edge—a way to stand out. Grado Labs set the precedent for "edge" by handcrafting each high-end headphone with unique elements like wooden ear cups and extra-cushy ear pads. The S550 closely resembles the Signature S950 Headphones, but with two clear distinctions: the Grado logo is placed clearly in the center of the ear cup grilles, and it comes fitted with Grado's B cushions instead of the G and F cushions included with the S950.
When the S950 came out, it was the first Grado headphone to use Brazilian Walnut for its housing. In my review of the S950, I went so far as to say that I hope this wood becomes a part of the rotation for future models. Well, Grado must have been reading because the S550 is officially the second Grado headphone to use Brazilian Walnut for its housing! Brazilian Walnut is not only beautiful, but it's known for its density and resistance to decay, delivering a relaxed, musical presentation and stability.
I'm a big fan of Grado's choice to use wooden housings on most of their headphones. The wood grain on each headphone is never identical, which is something truly special. Alongside being handcrafted, you can pretty much guarantee that your model is one-of-a-kind. Compared to the metal housings used on the HP100 SE and S750, the sonic results of Brazilian Walnut are very clear.
The overall design of the S550 follows suit with the S950, sporting sleek black accents to complement the deep, rich brown tones of the Brazilian Walnut. The headband, while it doesn't have a lot of cushion and doesn't feel extra padded, is surprisingly comfy. Looks can be deceiving, and that's the case with Grado's headband design. On the side of the headband, you'll find self-adjusting tension rods that are stiff enough to stay in place while you're wearing them, but easy enough to slide up and down for quick adjustments.
Between the headband, ear cup design, ear pads, and adjustable height rods, the Signature S550 is the perfect weight and fit. From the wise words of Baby Bear, "Not too hot. Not too cold. Just right." If the headband feels too tight at first, know that it'll stretch out over time to the perfect clamping force. But if they don't or you just can't wait, Grado says you can stretch them yourself by gently pulling at the ends of the headband to open them slightly. Keep in mind not to overstretch the headband though!
The headphones come with Grado's B ear pad cushions, a newer design that offers a balance of comfort, support, and acoustic performance. They'll provide a natural presentation that works across a wide range of genres, and if you're looking to upgrade those cushions down the line, you're in luck. The S550 is compatible with Grado's S, F, L, and G cushions, which each subtly influence both comfort and sound quality. The B cushions are firm enough to provide support and a nice sense of isolation while being comfortable and breathable enough to wear for extended periods of time.
As many of you may already know, Grado Headphones didn't always have a detachable headphone cable. That was a point of contention for some listeners who desired a cable upgrade, and Grado must have heard the qualms, because the Signature Line is the first collection to feature their detachable cable system. The included cable features a 3.5mm termination with 3-pin mini XLR connectors. A 6.3mm adapter is included for those who need it, which is a nice perk when bouncing between portable gear and larger stereo components. A 4.4mm termination is also available for those seeking a balanced connection to their favorite hi-fi gear.
Sound
Historically, Grado Headphones have been prized for their natural, detailed, and "up-front" sound quality, which complements many genres but favors classical, acoustic, and jazz genres. While this evolves by model and price tier, the Classic and Prestige series are the ones most associated with the Grado house sound. But when Grado released the HP100 SE, the first headphone in its Signature Line, Grado took a step in a new direction. Aside from the new physical attributes, the Signature Line models stand out for their smooth, balanced, and refined sound quality. New driver designs and tuning greatly contributed to this "next generation" sound, and with each new model released in the line, it keeps getting, sweeter.
The S550 closely follows suit with its siblings, delivering a smooth, balanced, and breathtakingly musical sound. It has the immediacy and openness of a Grado headphone. The presentation is airy and natural with an intimate soundstage. When I hit shuffle on my playlist, one of the first tracks to pop up was Imma Be by The Black Eyed Peas. Anyone familiar with this song knows it's pretty bass-heavy with a clear thump throughout the entire track. I was caught off guard when the S550 articulated that thump clearly and with a surprising amount of energy. There's a clear low-end presentation that's quick and punchy. Now, it doesn't have that deep sub-bass rumble you get from a closed-back headphone, but it's got enough mid-bass presence to articulate the low-end nicely. I wouldn't go as far as to say these are the headphones for the person who solely listens to bass-heavy tracks, but it does justice for rock, pop, and any other genre with some low-end reproduction.
Chains of Love by Charli XCX is the breakout track on the Wuthering Heights soundtrack that's been circulating the internet for the last few months. It starts soft and quickly escalates into a crescendo that's the chorus. Charli XCX has an impressive vocal range, and the emotion she conveys throughout the song is one of the reasons why it's so intoxicating and popular. The S550 does it justice, reproducing the chorus with a lot of energy without sacrificing musicality and emotion. Detail retrieval is top-tier, and I wasn't expecting anything less from a Grado Headphone.
Compared to the Signature HP100 SE Headphones, the S550 stands out for its bass response, dynamic range, and warmer, more musical presentation. The HP100 SE is more neutral with a wider soundstage and a smooth midrange. The S550 and Signature S950 Headphones are the most similar to each other, though the S950 is slightly more resolving and relaxed. The S550, by contrast, brings more energy and dynamics to the midrange.

I'd say that Grado has successfully achieved their goals with the S550. It handles demanding passages with ease, reproduces fine details and nuances, and complements a wide range of genres.

It delivers a level of musicality, craftsmanship, and detail retrieval that you'd expect from a flagship headphone, but for a fraction of the price.
