The ATH-AWX7000 represents the pinnacle of Audio-Technica wooden headphone craftsmanship, pairing the latest acoustic technology with traditional Japanese artistry.
The headphone housings are fashioned from prized Kiso cypress, used historically to construct Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, and hand-finished with traditional Echizen lacquer to bring out the natural color and beauty of the wood's grain. Supple, durable deerskin, which has been part of Japanese ceremonial attire since the fourth century, is used for the earpads and headband, ensuring lasting comfort and exceptional sound isolation. Machined aluminum sliders are affixed to a lightweight magnesium frame to ensure precise size adjustments, and all the trim pieces—frame, arms, and sliders—are finished in the deep navy hue of kachi-iro, the lucky color of the samurai.
Inside these sublime housings we have incorporated innovative 58 mm drivers that combine our newly developed HMD (Hybrid Matrix Diaphragm) technology with the precise HXDT driver molding technology we introduced with our ATH-ADX7000 Open-Air headphones. By expanding the area that bonds the composite diaphragm's polymer film and metal dome, HMD technology enables the diaphragm to maintain its shape, even under great air pressure strain. This allows the ideally shaped, HXDT-molded diaphragm to vibrate as a single unit and harness the full power of the input signal's air spring. By driving the air with a precise, piston-like motion from the headphones' internal front chamber all the way to the listener's ears, these tandem technologies achieve a level of performance previously unattainable with other closed-back designs.
The flexible yet robust diaphragm remains stable even at mechanically demanding frequencies below the audible range. This gives the headphones a wide dynamic range with an expansive soundstage and strong, clear bass extension. The sound is warm and lush, immersing the listener in a deep, lively, well-layered musical expanse.
The ATH-AWX7000 comes with two detachable, 8-braid cables with A2DC (Audio Designed Detachable Coaxial) connectors that attach to the headphones: a 2.5 m (8.2') balanced cable with Neutrik 4-pin XLRM connectors and a 3.0 m (9.8') unbalanced cable with a 6.3 mm (1/4") gold-plated stereo plug. A sturdy, compact carrying case is also included.

HMD + HXDT Technologies
Unparalleled Driver Design
HMD (Hybrid Matrix Diaphragm) technology, developed for the ATH-AWX7000, expands the bonding area between the polymer film and the metal dome of the composite diaphragm to disperse stress generated at high-input levels. This enables the diaphragm to better maintain its shape. By combining HMD with the precision molding process of HXDT technology, introduced with our ATH-ADX7000 open-back headphones, we've created an ideally shaped diaphragm that vibrates as a single unit, thus significantly improving transient response and dynamics.
Flagship Closed-Back Headphones
Deep, Dynamic Bass
The headphones' flexible yet robust diaphragms respond faithfully to the sound source without being overwhelmed by air pressure. This allows the headphones to fully realize the wide dynamic range potential of closed-back headphones, with seemingly bottomless bass.
Kiso Cypress & Echizen Lacquer
Japanese Craftsmanship
The ATH-AWX7000's housings are fashioned from Kiso cypress, one of Japan's finest woods, renowned for its durability, appearance, fragrance, and history (the timber has been used to construct Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples). Echizen lacquer, which has a history stretching back more than 1,500 years, is hand-applied to the housings to bring out the natural beauty of the wood's grain. With time, the wood's color will darken, adding to the distinctive character of each pair of these exquisite headphones.
