Leading the way for our 4th-gen X Drivers, the redesigned RS1x combines maple, hemp, and cocobolo wood into a vivacious and elegant headphone.
The Sound of Wood
For the first time, three different wood species are working together in a Grado headphone. The housing is made of a maple sleeve, hemp core, and cocobolo outer ring. We build with wood for its warm and embracing tonal abilities, but finding the right balance of three separate woods is no simple task. The reward, though, is an RS1x that opens Grado to a new level of sound.
What Grado is Known For.
Signature Sound
Pulling everything they can from the new 50mm X Driver, the signature sound is brought to new heights when combined with maple, hemp, and cocobolo. Maple takes care of most of the work, hemp smooths out the top and low ends, while cocobolo adds that extra punch. Together, the sounds the woods produce, when combined with our special processes, are full-bodied, dynamic, and truly defined.

X Series Drivers
The RS1x is the first headphone to be built with the larger 50mm X Drivers. Specifically tuned for the tri-wood RS1x, this new speaker design features a more powerful magnetic circuit, a voice coil with decreased effective mass, and a reconfigured diaphragm. Reengineering these components for our 50mm drivers improves efficiency, reduces distortion, and preserves the harmonic integrity of your music.
A Little Extra.
New Cable & Headbands
Along with the speakers, the cables and headband have been redesigned for the RS1x. Housed in a more durable exterior, the now super annealed copper 8-conductor cable reveals even more of your music with improved purity. The new black leather headband features a white-stitched accent.

Hand-Built in Brooklyn
Grado's first wooden headphones were built in the middle of the night back in 1994 by John Grado. Wood has been a staple on their workbench ever since. Each RS2x headphone is hand-built by their team in Brooklyn - these headphones go from workbench to workbench until they’re ready for your ears. Grado started building on a kitchen table in 1953, and every experience since then has led to the RS2x.

Loving these new Grado headphones. I waited until I had about 75 hours on them and able to play through a decent headphone amp to write this review. I initially played them through the jack on my Oppo DVD player, and even though it had plenty of juice to power them the sound was good but not great. Keep in mind this is digital. Since my integrated amp did not have a headphone jack, I picked up the Heed Canamp off of Craigslist. I did most a my critical with records, and the Grados are lots of fun. Wonderful with acoustic music, vocals, and jazz. The Grados play with good authority without being in your face, accuracy, excellent dynamics, nice punchy bass with a warm timbre. They are lively for sure, but not overbearing. I can play for 2-3 hours without fatigue. Plus they have plenty of finesse and resolution which adds great staging and holography to the music. The phones may be a tad bright on the lower treble scale, but nothing too glaring. Maybe this will smooth out with time. Then I switched to rock and reggae, and this is were RS1xs shine and get the toes tapping. Hearing lots of details and open sound I did not get from the Planar magnetic phones I sent back. The planars did have great detail, but then again sounded compressed and muddy compared to the Grados..The Grados and very light and comfortable, I just wish the ear pads were of a nice luxurious leather and that the cables could be disconnected. On the subject the cables, I got my Grados with Moon Audio’s Black…
