One driver developing detail-oriented sound
The newly developed Unipolar Micro Planar Magnetic Driver featured in LUNA, named Katabiki(片響), was developed in cooperation with MADOO.
Inspired by dynamic drivers, this driver adopts a unique unipolar magnetic circuit and is designed with a strong focus on resonance characteristics. The diaphragm housing is precisely CNC-machined from aluminum, ensuring high rigidity of the driver body. It utilizes an ultra-thin, lightweight film with a printed aluminum pattern, dramatically reducing the diaphragm's weight. The magnetic circuit uses a powerful single magnet and a dual ring-shaped yoke to achieve excellent magnetic flux control. These elements allow Katabiki (片響) to deliver outstanding response speed, exceptional resolution, and natural resonance characteristics, faithfully reproducing even the most delicate details of music.

Where Japanese Craftsmanship Meets Korean Audio Engineering
Most hi-fi IEMs try too hard to impress you with flashy aesthetics and aggressive tuning, but the Astell&Kern Luna does something far more challenging: it proves that sometimes less is more and lets the sound quality do all the talking. This is where Japanese craftsmanship meets Korean audio engineering in a sub-$3K package that might just redefine what you expect from planar magnetic IEMs.
At $2,970, the Luna IEMs are Astell&Kern's third edition of earphones, following the AK-ZERO1 and AK-ZERO2 series. But unlike its predecessors, the Luna takes a bold step with a newly developed driver delivering incredible sonic results. Design
If the name didn't give it away, the Luna IEMs draw their inspiration from the moon. And honestly, the design team just nailed this concept. The silver finish, rounded body, and that distinctive thumbprint indentation aren't just for aesthetics—it's a functional design that makes these IEMs a pleasure to use.
Despite their traditional wired earbud shape, they fit and feel like proper IEMs. After wearing them for over two hours at a time, I can confidently say they're some of the most comfortable IEMs I've ever tested. The seal remained consistent whether I was wearing glasses, walking around, or settling in for long listening sessions.
And that thumbprint groove? Well, that isn't just for show. It was genuinely useful when inserting the IEMs and adjusting the cable behind my ear. I was able to hold the IEM steady with my index finger while using my thumb to position the cable perfectly.
Build quality is in line with Astell&Kern's typical caliber. The titanium housing feels sturdy and premium—it's not heavy, just durable. Then you have the minimalist aesthetic with a subtle AK logo engraved on each IEM. The Luna is crafted in Japan by seasoned artisans with deep-rooted experience in IEM design, and it shows in every refined curve and metallic texture.
The included cable deserves a special mention. It's designed by Elitech using silver-plated OCC and copper OCC with a two-pin termination and a 4.4mm balanced connector. The silver and copper deliver detailed, accurate sound quality, and the silver aesthetics tie everything together perfectly.
Sound
Now, for the most important question: how do they sound? In just one word—natural. The Luna delivers what I call a natural, neutral-leaning sound signature. But don't mistake that for boring or clinical, because it's anything but that.
There's something beautifully organic about these IEMs. The soundstage immediately grabs your attention. It's both wide and deep, creating this three-dimensional space that makes you forget you're even wearing IEMs. The bass is punchy and fast with excellent extension, but this definitely isn't a basshead IEM.
The midrange presentation is where the Luna truly shines. Vocals sit naturally in the mix with excellent dynamics that bring life to every genre I threw at them. And speaking of genres, these are incredibly versatile.
Whether I was listening to Taylor Swift's emotional ballads, where the weight of her vocals is simply tangible, or diving into complex classical and jazz arrangements, the Luna maintained a realistic, faithful reproduction of the music, which is exactly what Astell&Kern promises and the Luna delivers.
I found myself thoroughly enjoying the Luna with the Astell&Kern SP3000M DAP, and then our Bronze Dragon IEM Cable was the perfect match. The Bronze Dragon IEM Cable added musicality and body to the Luna's already impressive presentation, just further enhancing the character, texture, and realistic, lifelike sound quality that you get from the Luna.
The synergy of the Luna IEMs with AK DAPs is impressive in its own regard. On its own, the Luna IEM is the perfect choice for the detail-oriented analytical listener who wants the most accurate sound reproduction. It's natural and full of life with incredible timbre, detail retrieval, and clarity. And even if you are a warm and musical listener, it's still going to cater to you. That is the beauty of the Luna IEM—they're truly versatile in every way, shape, and form.

Revolutionary Driver Technology
Inside the Luna IEMs is a single planar magnetic driver—but not just any planar driver. This is developed in collaboration with Japanese earphone specialist MEDU. Together, they created the uniplanar micro planar magnetic driver, otherwise known as the Kadabiki.
- Taking inspiration from dynamic drivers, the Kadabiki uses a uniplanar magnetic circuit made of the following:
- CNC-machined aluminum diaphragm housing promotes high rigidity and strength
- Ultra-thin super lightweight film with a printed aluminum pattern, reducing the diaphragm's overall weight
- Powerful single magnet and dual ring-shaped yok, achieving optimal magnetic flux control
Wrap it all up together, er and you get a driver capable of delivering incredibly fast response times, exceptional detail resolution, and natural resonance characteristics.
The uniplanar micro planar magnetic driver represents a breakthrough in IEM technology. By combining the precision of planar magnetic technology with design inspiration from dynamic drivers, Astell&Kern and MEDU have created a driver that offers:
- Lightning-fast transient response
- Minimal distortion across the frequency spectrum
- Natural, organic sound reproduction
- Exceptional detail retrieval without harshness
- Optimal magnetic control for precise sound delivery
This collaborative effort between Astell&Kern and MEDU showcases the innovation happening at the intersection of Japanese precision engineering and Korean audio expertise. The Kadabiki driver isn't just a technical achievement—it's the foundation of Luna's natural, musical sound signature that makes extended listening sessions a genuine pleasure.
Dragon Cables
The balanced, natural sound quality of the Luna IEMs makes them the perfect candidate for our Dragon Audio Cables. The Bronze Dragon IEM Cable is my personal recommendation, adding warmth, musicality, and body to the Luna's already impressive presentation. You'll experience enhanced character, texture, and that realistic, lifelike sound quality that makes the Luna truly special.
The Bronze Dragon IEM Cable complements the Luna's natural neutral signature beautifully. It adds just enough warmth and richness without compromising the exceptional detail retrieval and clarity that make these IEMs stand out. The synergy between the Luna and Bronze Dragon is remarkable—together they create a listening experience that's both technically impressive and emotionally engaging.
For those seeking even more top-end resolution and clarity, the Silver Dragon IEM Cable will take everything great about the Luna and enhance it further. You'll experience crystalline detail retrieval with enhanced air and sparkle in the treble region.
If you prefer a slightly warmer and fuller sound with enhanced low-end presence, the Black Dragon IEM Cable adds bottom-end weight for a more intimate and enveloping presentation.
Verdict
At $2,970, the Astell&Kern Luna IEMs aren't just another pair of high-end in-ear monitors. They represent a thoughtful convergence of Japanese craftsmanship and Korean audio engineering that delivers something increasingly rare in today's hi-fi market: natural, uncolored sound reproduction that never sacrifices musicality for technical prowess.
