Design Concept

The design of A&futura SE100 resembles "unrestricted balance" from a composition of a trapezoid and curves together. The volume knob at the end of the side curve is easy to operate from front and back and its shape fits just right in either hand.

The glass back plate has a unique arrangement of "A" logos in a diamond pattern that visualizes the amplification of Astell&Kern before your eyes. As you rotate the device under light its hidden beauty shines.

Premium Value You Can Feel in Your Hands

A&futura SE100 shows our dedication to provide both premium quality and value to our listeners including an eye-catching design. It features a 5-inch touchscreen, Octa-core CPU, and the best audio performance in its league. Astell&Kern is committed to delivering the original performance as the artist intended you to hear and the SE100 is a symbolic example of this vision and effort.

A&futura SE100 introduces an 8-channel DAC chip. 8-channel DACs have previously only been available for premium home audio systems, pro-audio workstations, and recording studio equipment. It is making a debut for the first time in an Astell&Kern portable system.

Your favorite tunes will now sound fundamentality different with even greater dynamic range and refined sound. There are many audio companies that talk about 'technologies', yet Astell&Kern is the only brand that talks about 'progress' in the audio experience.

- The ESS SABRE PRO series of Digital-to-Analog Converters (DAC) is targeted at premium audiophile and recording studio equipment. The SABRE PRO series sets a new benchmark in high-end audio by offering the industry's highest dynamic range (DNR) with impressively low levels of total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) in a 32-bit, 8-channel DAC. All PRO SABRE DACs feature ESS's patented 32-bit HyperStream DAC technology which delivers outstanding sound quality and industry leading performance.

Maximum Output

It is common knowledge in the audio industry that the amplifier plays a critical role in Hi-Fi audio systems. The latest know-how and amplifier design technologies developed by Astell&Kern have brought 4.1Vrms of balanced output power with minimal noise. As the output power increases, the noise fluctuates louder as well. However, A&futura SE100 shows 123dB of SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) at 4.1Vrms of audio output. At the same time, the noise level on single-ended is even smaller, it produces 122dB of SNR. Pure sound is the result in our technical achievement allowing for powerful, yet clean sound to be delivered gracefully by the SE100.

Femto-Second Clock for Exact Sonic Reproduction

An enhanced voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) high-precision clock has been utilized in the A&futura SE100. The reference jitter of Astell&Kern's implementation has improved performance to 800fs (femto seconds), meaning that the SE100 faithfully reproduces your music by precisely measuring and accurately timing the synchronization of all instruments, vocal and even ambience sound recorded in your digital music file together.

Worth Every Dollar- You will go to bed late listening to just one more song
September 17, 2019. I have had the SE100 for almost 3 weeks and have approximately 50-70 hours listening to it or letting it play. ( Read on some blog this helps the burn in quicker. Take it for what it’s worth. Not mentioned in the manual). I read in a review prior to buying the manual was lacking detail. So I downloaded the manual from Moon-Audio site and looked at their videos in their resource section. By the time I bought the player I knew how to operate the buttons and download music and the open service apps like Spotify and and DS Audio. The player basically updated the software as soon as I connected to WiIFI. I love the operating system. It’s clear and smooth and for me intuitive. I moved my music FLAC library from my Network Attached Storage System to a 400GB Micro SD card. It also was a easy process. I did it by connecting the SE100 via USB-C to my Mac and my NAS was connected via WIFi. The SE100 is an elegant player. Very well built. The corners are indeed sharpe and the player can feel slippery so I highly recommend a cover. I chose the Dignis leather case as it covered more of the player. Initially (3-4 days) I listened to the SE100 DS Audio function via my NAS. I used the unbalanced JH Audio cable that came with the Lola Universal IEMs. I wanted to get an idea as to if upgraded cables made a difference. I did this while waiting for my micro SD card to arrive. The player was great right out the box but seemed to get noticeably better as the hours went on. Once my SD card arrived I switched over to the Moon-Audio Silver Dragon cables and it was really really good. Very open and detailed. When I initially started playing the SE100 I was normally listening at a volume of 80-85. As the player, cables and IEMs burned in I am now listening with the same detail at 60-65 volume. I cannot express how much this player and IEM and cable combination just seems to get better the more I play it. The burn in theory may be correct. The player has worked flawlessly. I heard music I have listened to for years but now I am in the music. Most of my files are 16/24 FLAC files. I have a few 24/92/192 and DSD. While the 16 bit files sound great I plan to buy more 24/92 files. I think the SE100 really shines with the better files. While I listen to everything I love vocals, jazz with piano and or brass and R&B, Rock etc with guitars. Even my rap (Ice Cube sounds great) the JH Audio Lola IEMs have the ability to adjust the bass via the cable and it has no effect on the mids and highs. If the SP1000M/SP1000/SP2000 are better players I hope to never listen to them. For the price of the SE100 I got more than my money. I highly recommend the SE100.

Huge upgrade from IPods etc.
I might give a 5 rating down the road since I've only had it for 3 months. First, glad I bought from Moon. I'm pretty savvy with most devices but the AK manuals are not great. So I emailed Moon 5-6 times and always got a response within 24 hrs while I got nothing from AK direct. Plus Moon ships fast!
The goal was to replace aging Apple devices with a player that could sound better. Aces high! Imported many of my CDs into the SE100 and while I expected good things from FLAC size files, I was delighted with the actual sound. I also put about 40G of ITunes music on a sd chip and although lower quality, still sounds far better than IPod or computer.
The quality feel of the SE100 is in company with very high end audio products. You will for sure need a case for it; its slippery but $150 seems outrageous to me.
The Bluetooth coupling is sometimes balky as I go between 3 different Bluetooth systems. I went back and bought a charger from Moon which I recommend as it's faster and solid.
My only wish at this point is that the SE100 had 256g on board so I could rip more of my CDs direct. Oh...I also bought the CD Ripper which was a great partner and a critical addition if you want easy and quality import.

How will this connect to a NAIM DAC ? Thank you
Marui C on Mar 31, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Okay. I was making sure the model I was researching was the correct one. I found in the manual:

"Two further digital inputs are accessed via USB sockets; one on the front panel and one on the rear panel. The USB sockets can be used to connect USB memory sticks carrying audio files or Apple iPod or iPhone models."

It appears that the DAC will not accept an Android signal in the USB ports.
will this player drive 300 ohm headphones?
kerry h on Oct 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The SE100 has output voltage of 2.0Vrms (Unbalanced) and 4.1Vrms (Balanced). I have not heard of any issues of this player to drive higher impedance headphones. Which pair do you have, as it may depend on sensitivity of the drivers as well? Thank you.
