Music Hall Audio
Music
Hall Electronics evolved after a trip to
China
in 2001 by Roy Hall. The factory that makes them is a small family owned
business run by an ex-physics teacher. The first product was the CD-25,
a derivative of an existing CD player in their range. It was followed by
the Maverick SACD player, the Mambo ‘Class A’ integrated amp and the
Maven high-end, 2-channel receiver. The latter was brought to market
because most high-end manufacturers had converted their receivers to
multi-channel leaving us 2-channel lovers bereft.
The
latest items in the range are the CD25.2 CD player. This replaces the
CD-25. It features a Burr-Brown PCM 1738 24-bit/192kHz DAC, better
op-amps and improved power supply.
It is joined by the A25.2 which is a remote controlled 50 wpc. stereo
integrated amp. It has 4 inputs and a tape loop. Both are pieces are
inexpensive and sound amazing.

The cd35.2 is the
outstanding sequel to the highly acclaimed cd25.2. In crafting the
cd35.2, we opted not to change the solid minimalist style chassis and
instead focused our attention on upgrading the key sound producing
components; the cd transport, DAC, master clock, and power supply.
The cd transport, the core of the cd35.2, is the ultra-precision
Austrian built Stream Unlimited Blue Tiger transport. This
scientific-grade transport mechanism used in conjunction with a special
designed low-jitter master clock and Burr-Brown PCM 1732 24bit DAC
produces a lively natural analog-like sound. The high grade toroidal
power transformer and regulated power supplies insure the performance
remains consistently exceptional.
The cd35.2 is the perfect complement to Music Hall's a35.2 integrated
amplifier. These two components combined offer a remarkable “live music”
experience.

Mark Marcantonio of Tone Audio
(say that 10 times fast) discovers the, “…the third dimension…,” while
using the dac25.2.
“The dac25.2 tube output brings out the third dimension that gives horns
and strings the rich sound quality that goes missing so much of the time
with digitally sourced music.”
“Even the 128k streaming from Pandora improved to where I could actually
listen without being critical…”
“…the office system never sounded better.”
Full Review
Music Hall
significantly upgraded the award winning dac25.2 to the dac25.3. The
upgrade was to the USB input which now accepts 24bit/96kHz signals. The
dac25.3 is natively compatible with Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000 and Mac OS
X.
Today an increasing number of music lovers are buying storing and
listening to music through their computer, media server, or personal
music player (iPod). Many are also digitally distributing their music
using a sonos, squeezebox, or one of a host of digital music
distribution systems available on the market. This is a great way to
explore and appreciate music but generally it’s done at the expense of
sound quality. Until now music lovers have been forced to rely on the
inferior digital to analog converters (DACs) and sounds cards contained
in those devices. As a result, their musical enjoyment has dramatically
suffered. We designed the dac25.3 to directly address this problem and
to significantly improve the sound quality of the music played on these
systems.
By uniting a state of the art digital to analog converter with a tube
output we produce the clarity and precision of a 24bit DAC with the warm
rich open sound people love of tubes. The dac25.3 has 4 digital inputs
which can accept any coax (s/pdif), optical, XLR (AES/EBU), or USB
digital input from an iPod transport, computer, media server, sonos,
squeezebox, CD/DVD in stereo transport, or music hall’s own cd35.2
compact disc player, and it will output two channel stereo analog.
The dac25.3 features the latest texas instruments (formerly burr-brown)
PCM 1796 24bit/192kHz, advanced segment, stereo audio digital to analog
converter. This processor features 123dB dynamic range an 8 x
oversampling digital filter and just 0.0005% thd. The dac25.3 upsamples
to either 96kHz or 192kHz which is user selectable on the front panel.
To achieve the best sound we use an advanced asynchronous reclocking and
anti jitter control system upstream of the PCM 1796 DAC. For this system
we are using the philips 74HC574 in conjunction with the ti SRC4192
asynchronous sample rate converter whose master clock is a high
precision active crystal oscillator. The dac25.3 also features a large
r-core high current oversize power transformer. A headphone output is
provided for convenient personal listening.
•usb input accepts 24bit/96kHz signal
•electro-harmonix 6922 tube single-ended (rca) output
•solid-state differential balanced output
•ti PCM 1796 24bit/192kHz DAC
•ti SRC 4192 asynchronous sample rate converter
•high precision active crystal oscillator master clock
•user selectable 96kHz or 192kHz upsampling
•asynchronous reclocking and anti jitter control system

Stereophile’s Sam Tellig
describes the bass on the Music Hall ph25.2 as, “…more grab-ass.”
“…great clarity, superb bass authority, sweetly extended treble…”
“This is an outstanding headphone amp.”
Full Review
Marrying a gorgeous sounding tube pre-amp with solid-state amplification
has been a technique for achieving unequaled sound quality in hi-end
component audio since the advent of the transistor. While kicking around
ideas for our new headphone amp we thought, why not try this same
technique in a single component? We built one up and were blown away by
the increased detail, clarity, and presence the design offered. The tube
hybrid headphone amp was born. Hand assembled using the highest quality
parts available the music hall ph25.2 will have you singing along with
your favorite artists.
