New! SA8003 Introduction
video through YouTube.
Click this icon now!
Think of the SA8003 SA-CD/CD
player as the beneficiary of continuous refinement. As good as previous
Marantz disc players were, the SA8003 moves several steps closer to that
elusive Holy Grail that transports you to a vivid live performance. From
its new disc tray and USB port to Marantz’s exclusive HDAM® circuitry,
the SA8003 is your window into the souls of your favorite performers.
The Marantz SA8003 brings
advanced engineering to all manner of discs – SA-CDs, CDs, even MP3- and
WMA-encoded CD-Rs and –RWs. And its advanced digital processing and
best-in-class analog circuitry bring even your flash-card playlists to
life thanks to a front-panel USB input.
But Marantz design doesn’t extend to just the obvious. As an example,
we’ll ask a question: Almost no one thinks twice about the disc tray,
right? Well, Marantz engineers do. And when you realize that the tray is
the most important mechanical link between your favorite discs and the
rest of the disc player, you realize just how important it is.
That’s why Marantz helped develop a material called Zylon for the
SA8003’s tray. Zylon is a composition of rigid-rod chain molecules of
poly(p-phenyene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) or PBO for short. (Now you know why
we call it Zylon!) This new tray material has high tensile strength and
a high modulus of elasticity. Because it isolates the disc so well from
the micro-vibrations inherent in any drive mechanism, it allows the
digital circuitry to process a more accurate data stream. This, in turn,
translates directly into a more coherent and pleasing aural experience.
While you’re taking a virtual tour of the SA8003’s interior, look at the
large toroidal transformer. In addition to the exterior casing that
damps stray flux fields even further, you’ll notice a large brass
mounting screw that helps hold the transformer firmly in place. Why
brass? Simply because it’s totally non-conductive due to the
non-magnetic material, it plays a role in reducing extraneous noise.
True, it might be a small improvement but it’s an example of the lengths
to which Marantz engineers go to optimize every aspect of a component’s
performance.
We’d also like to point out the separate power supply and audio circuit
boards that flank the transformer for even further noise suppression
capability.
We’ve used the SA8003’s high-performance Cirrus Logic digital-to-analog
converter in other – and far more expensive – disc players in the past.
This circuit brings several advantages. In technical terms, its
architecture combines a proprietary multi-bit/Delta-Sigma demodulator
with noise shaping technology. It eliminates the need for dynamic
component matching within the D/A converter itself as well as removes
potential destructive artifacts from the resulting signal. For SA-CD
playback, the Cirrus IC accepts the SA-CD’s 2.8224 MHz sampling rate
directly without the need for decimation. And an integral 50 kHz
low-pass filter protects downstream components from potential
oscillation.
You’ll also notice a number of critically selected parts at important
spots in the analog output circuitry. They’ve been chosen because they
meet the criteria established not only in the lab but also in the
listening room. And you’ll see Marantz’s proprietary HDAM SA2 circuits
there, too. Used primarily as output buffers, these HDAM circuits
benefit from a discrete component complement rather than earlier ICs.
Under all this advanced circuitry, you might not notice the double-layer
chassis bottom plate. But it provides long-term alignment for all the
SA8003’s separate assemblies as well as helps damp external vibration.
If you look carefully, you’ll certainly see the large copper plate
behind the machined, chassis-mounted gold-plated analog outputs. The
plate minimizes any ground potential between the outputs and results in
quieter playback. The outputs themselves are spaced to allow your choice
of any interconnect. Mounting them directly to the chassis means you
won’t pull them off when changing cables. Small points? Well, not
really. When you add up all the similar touches within the SA8003,
you’ll understand their surprisingly-large cumulative effect. And it
results from an almost maniacal determination to make the SA8003 as good
as it can possibly be.
The shielded digital output provides yet another example of this
approach. Rather than allowing spurious radiation, as is the case with
most digital outputs, the copper case effectively traps digital pulses
and prevents them from interfering with adjacent circuits.
The headphone output, usually far down on the priority list for lesser
players, includes a high-speed current buffer circuit for minimal
interference, maximum articulation, stability, and fatigue-free
listening.
Complete with a soft-touch Power/Standby switch and full-function
remote, the SA8003 brings top-shelf disc playback to a wider audience
than ever before. A true Marantz, it contains the most advanced circuits
in a chassis that’s highly styled to blend with any décor. It’s a
stunning contemporary expression of the Marantz “look,“ long the
standard for the entire home entertainment industry.

CD5003 Single Disc CD Player

Here’s an affordable CD
player that uses parts originally developed for our Reference Series
disc players. Case in point? The HDAM (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module)
first developed to meet the challenge of reproducing the subtle nuances
of the original Compact Disc. In the CD5003, we use the SA2 version at
critical analog circuit junctions to insure smooth and ultra-fast signal
transfer from one stage to another.
The D/A converters themselves come from Cirrus Logic. Yes, we’ve used
them before but only in far more expensive products such as our
THX-certified DV8400 DVD player. So we know they’re good. In fact,
they’re capable of handling high definition audio data streams (DSD and
24-bit/192 kHz PCM signals) without losing their composure. You might
think they’re a bit of overkill for CD reproduction. But you’ll know
better once you hear the CD5003.
Connecting the CD5003 to the rest of your system is easy, even if you
choose high performance cables. For one thing, the gold-plated output
terminals are widely spaced so they won’t cramp heavy duty connectors.
And the terminals are chassis-mounted so they’ll take the strain of
audiophile interconnects.
For private listening, the current-buffer headphone amplifier uses high
slew rate op amps to bring you extraordinary sound quality.
If you’re a musician, the word “tuning” probably causes a grimace.
That’s because it’s often very difficult to play along with a disc
because of pitch differences between it and an instrument. The CD5003
offers an easy solution to that dilemma, a pitch adjustment that
“retunes” the disc so you don’t have to return your guitar or anything
else you’re playing! And this pitch adjustment is perfect for slowing
down those hard-to-learn riffs that can make or break a performance.
Don’t forget the CD5003’s Quick Replay feature either. Just push a
remote control button and the CD5003 instantly “backs up” anywhere from
5 to 60 seconds (your choice) and begins playing again. So if you didn’t
catch that riff the first time, you can quickly hear it again. And
again.
Audiophiles, on the other hand, want everything just as it was recorded.
So if you’re of that persuasion, you’ll really appreciate the CD5003’s
selectable Audio EX mode. It bypasses the pitch control, mutes the
digital output, and shuts the FL display off completely. With those
three potential noise sources eliminated, you’ll be able to hear
everything just as the artists intended.
You’ll also be interested to know that the CD5003 plays more than just
conventional CDs. It’s ready for CD-R and CD-RW discs with MP3 and WMA
files, too. So you can listen to your favorite playlists with full CD
convenience.
In addition to all the information you need to locate and enjoy your
favorite passages, the high density fluorescent display also shows CD
Text. Simply press the remote’s TEXT button to see the album title,
track title, artist and composer name, etc. (Of course, this information
has to be recorded onto the disc in the first place but you’d be
surprised how many discs include this today.)
For custom installation demands, the CD5003 has a detachable AC cord and
a flasher input jack for remote control ease.
It’s all housed in our new chassis that combines the structural
advantages of extruded aluminum with the resonance absorption
characteristics of glass-reinforced resin. And the sculptured
decor-friendly front panel speaks eloquently of your sense of style.
All in all, the CD5003 is a supremely attractive CD player. A musician
can slow things down or speed things up. An audiophile hears every
detail. Either way, the CD5003 gets everything off the disc. And you get
to choose how you want to hear it. Yes, it’s a Marantz. And a most
flexible Marantz at that.

audio
video REVOLUTION - the PM8003 review
Listening to the PM8003 brought back many wonderful childhood memories
and made me glad Marantz is still here with me, decades on. That
Marantz sound and shining blue light are still magical.- Todd Whitesel
If the Marantz PM8003 were a
boxer and not an integrated amplifier, it would automatically top the
“best pound-for-pound” ratings. That’s because it possesses a rare
combination of power and finesse that results in totally fulfilling
music reproduction. From its elegant appearance to its refined
circuitry, the PM8003 is convincing to listen to and convenient to use.
In short, it’s simply another Marantz legend in the making.
Few components can boast the refined array of circuit innovation hidden
in the PM8003’s chassis. All devoted to one goal – more natural music
reproduction – they grew naturally from Marantz’s long history of sonic
excellence.
At the beginning, Marantz engineers specified a power supply based on a
large toroid transformer to control stray magnetic fields. They insisted
on custom capacitors that efficiently stored and released energy to all
circuits as needed. The circuits themselves? A careful amalgam of both
thoroughly proven and promising new topologies. Parts selection? Not
only the best under laboratory test conditions but also the best after
careful evaluation by the most critical instrument of all – the human
ear.
In both the preamp and power amp sections, the PM8003 uses
fully-discrete, high speed current feedback circuits for minimal phase
shift and better detail resolution. Even the phono input, normally a low
quality after-thought in some competitor’s offerings, is a fully
discrete, constant-current design optimized for moving magnet phono
cartridges. Another discrete implementation – this time of Marantz’s
notable HDAM® SA3 (the most recent addition to the High Definition
Amplifier Module series) – performs critical voltage to current
conversions throughout the PM8003.
Most inputs benefit from a common buffer circuit that minimizes unwanted
interactions between source and amp. The CD input enjoys a separate
buffer for even better isolation.
The amplifier section in particular is optimized for high instantaneous
peak current capability. This involves both a mechanical and electrical
redesign of previous approaches to minimize the length of power supply
lines and their potential interference. The resulting amplifiers boast
individual power supply segments mounted on the same heat sink
extrusions as the output transistors themselves. An advantage is the
ability to make the power supply traces wider and more efficient but the
real benefit is the PM8003’s ability to respond instantly and crisply to
musical transients that lesser amplifiers would simply blur.
For even more fastidious listening, the PM8003 includes a “Source
Direct” switch that bypasses balance and tone control circuits. And the
Record Out terminals sport their own buffer for enhanced clarity with
your choice of recording devices.
In the PM8003, even the pre-out/main-in terminals serve an additional
purpose. A convenient front panel switch optimizes the main-in terminals
for use with a separate surround processor and disables the PM8003’s
front panel controls (input selection, volume, balance, etc.). Another
three-second push on the Power Amp Direct button restores the PM8003 to
normal stereo operation.
The front panel uses a carefully chosen combination of aluminum and
glass-reinforced resin to create a distinctive three dimensional
appearance. Indirect reflecting blue LEDs indicating input selection,
etc., heighten that elegant appearance.
Small details, those affecting both connectivity and convenience, add to
the PM8003’s appeal. Rear panel speaker connectors, for example, are
Marantz original designs. Rear panel input and output terminals are
gold-plated for long-term corrosion resistance and better conductivity.
Aluminum front panel knobs add solidity while the high precision
motorized volume control responds instantly to both touch and the
PM8003’s included remote control.
As a proper foundation for this performance- and feature-rich component,
the chassis itself includes a triple-layer bottom plate to insure
long-term alignment and vibration control. In short, the Marantz PM8003
provides exceptional music reproduction for the most discriminating
listener. And it doesn’t short-change the home theater enthusiast,
either. But that’s only in keeping with the Marantz tradition. After
all, man does not exist by sound alone. Even if we’d like to think so.

Looking
for Marantz quality in a modestly powered integrated stereo amplifier?
The PM5003 may be just what you need. Great in a starter system for a
music aficionado or for “second systems” in summer homes, dens, or
dorms, this gem delivers the sonic excellence Marantz is known for in an
attractive, easy-to-use package. Attractively priced as a first amp for
many. With performance that may well make it the last amp for some.

Source Direct switch
MM phono input
Active Filter type Tone Control, Loudness
5 line-level inputs
2 Record outputs
Transparent screw-type A/B speaker terminals
Triple command code sets
IR flasher input
Detachable AC cord, Standby Mode

System remote controller
Integrated amplifiers are the best choice for anyone looking for superb
performance without the complexity or cost of a comparable receiver or
preamplifier/power amplifier combination. Their minimalist design (no
tuner, no fancy processing) means that the engineering team concentrates
on the essentials that directly contribute to better sound. So,
depending on your point of view, you either get a lot more than you paid
for or spent a lot less than you thought you would. That sounds like a
“win-win” situation to us. And the PM5003 will sound even better to you.
The PM5003 features something called current feedback design. That’s
engineering-ese for a circuit with better ability to accurately track
quickly changing, wide bandwidth musical signals than more conventional
voltage feedback topologies. The amplifiers themselves are
custom-designed entirely with discrete components so you don’t suffer
any of the built-in limitations of off-the-shelf integrated circuits.
That means that whatever input you select, whether it’s one of the five
line level circuits or the phono stage, you’ll enjoy superb sound
quality. And these inputs feed a buffer circuit that minimizes any
interaction between the source and the PM5003. For the ultra-golden
eared folks, there’s a Source Direct switch so you can bypass tone and
balance controls for the shortest signal path from input to output.
Want to record your favorite sources? Just connect the recording device
of your choice to the Record Out jacks and begin!
Connecting speakers is easy, too. The new transparent terminals are easy
to use and let you see if there are any problems with your wiring.
The PM 5003 even comes with a variety of connections that make for easy
system integration in a custom-installed whole-house arrangement. You
can select any of the three built-in remote control command sets so you
can individually use up to three PM5003s in a single system. A separate
IR flasher input and detachable AC cord allow easy placement in a
cabinet or rack, too.
Of course, the PM5003 comes with a hand held controller so you can
adjust your amplifier from the comfort of your favorite armchair.
So, from the composite aluminum/glass-reinforced resin front panel to
the new speaker terminals, this amplifier fulfills the needs of any
music lover whose room isn’t quite as big as the sports stadium down the
road. And it’s a Marantz – your assurance of the best sound around. |
