AE-2 PORTABLE HEADPHONE AMP
The HeadAmp AE-2 is our new portable headphone amp. The AE-2 has the
ability to drive just about any headphone in the world, from 16 to 600
ohm impedance.
The AE-2 looks and feels like a solid brick. The front panel consists of
a pair of 3.5mm audio jacks (a headphone output and an audio input)
located on opposite sides of the panel for convenient placement of
cables. In the center is the volume knob and a pair of mini red LEDs
indicating power and charge status. Everything is labeled with precise
laser engraving and won't ever fade or fall off.
The amp's power switch - a slide-type designed to be difficult to
accidentally flip while located in a bag or pocket - along with the DC
adapter jack and a pair of RCA inputs are located on the back panel.
While the amp does have two inputs (the RCA and the 3.5mm inputs), only
one should be used at a time. The other jack can then be used as a
loop/tape output.
A gain switch is recessed underneath the amp and allows the AE-2 to be
set for up to 3 different gain levels. At any gain level and with any
headphone, you'll find the AE-2 to have a completely silent background.
A Lithium-Ion battery pack powers the AE-2. Lithium-Ion batteries have a
greater power density than NiMH or NiCad rechargeable batteries
resulting in a 30 hour battery life -- about 3 times longer than a 9V
NiMH battery. Lithium-Ion batteries are also excellent for audio, their
low impedance able to supply large amounts of current quickly.
An included DC adapter charges the internal batteries - it takes about 3
hours for a full charge from empty, and the amp can be used while
charging. The use of the DC adapter while charging does not induce any
hum or hiss into the audio as the amp remains on clean battery power.
The AE-2 has a safer, smarter and more sophisticated charging system
than most amplifiers.
The AE-2 is currently available in black, silver, and bronze colors. The
volume knobs can be either brushed finish to match the amp, or polished.
