Epos
Encore 50
|
$10,000 |
|

|
There is no substitute for the pure musical
involvement and enjoyment to be experienced when listening to the
new Epos Encore 50. This unique Epos Flagship loudspeaker has been 3
years in the making but, there is no doubt the time taken to develop
this exceptional loudspeaker has been well worth the wait.
Each and every part of the Epos Encore 50 has been developed by Epos
engineers to a standard not previously achieved by the company. From
the original design concept through to the cabinet construction,
speaker drive units, crossover and final voicing, the Encore 50
stands superior in every way.
Cabinet:
It is tall and imposing yet exhibits elegance synonymous with Epos.
Standing 1.2 meters high, it is deeper rather than wide and is
supplied with a strong stylish painted MDF plinth to support its 50
kg weight and spread its footprint for improved stability and
mechanical decoupling. Fully adjustable turned aluminum and steel
spiked feet can raise or lower the speaker to adjust or tilt the
level. The cabinet itself is made from a composite of birch-plywood
and MDF which has been extensively strengthened internally using
plywood bracing within the mid-range and bass enclosures.
To ensure the lowest coloration, the cabinet and bracing have been
optimized, following accelerometer measurements and listening tests.
Hand selected and book-matched real wood veneer has been chosen give
the most luxurious finish on an Epos speaker so far.
Separate Bass, Mid-range and Crossover sections of the cabinet are
hermetically sealed and allow the Crossover to be located in a
convenient section at the bottom of the cabinet, accessed via the
large, ventilated terminal panel on the bottom rear with a letter
box opening in the plinth. All drive units are separately wired to
the crossover section, using custom Epos solid core wire.
The bass enclosure has a volume of 43 liters. Two 220mm woofers are
bass-reflex loaded by one large diameter 90mm port, positioned
mid-way between the woofers and flared at both ends to minimize port
turbulence and harmonic distortion. The height and spacing of the
woofers has been chosen to minimize the ‘floor-bounce’ cancellation,
optimize bass output and ensure a smooth bass-mid range transition
in room. The mid-range unit is in its own, braced, 8 liter
sealed-box enclosure.
Plinth:
A custom made MDF plinth helps to extend
the footprint of the speaker and decouple mechanical vibrations from
the cabinet. This makes the speaker more stable in a domestic
environment and improves low frequency performance. It also allows
access to the crossover adjustment patch-board. Adjustable metal
feet allow the height and angle of the speaker to be adjusted. This
enables a custom skateboard to fit underneath so the speaker can be
transported on wheels to a different position and then carefully
lowered into place. This is supplied with the speakers.
Drive Units:
The 2 x 220 mm woofers and 158 mm mid-range cones are made from a
Kevlar/carbon fibre/pulp mixture to combine high rigidity, with good
inherent damping and feature concave dust caps coupled tightly to
the cone. Frequency responses of both woofer and mid-range are
inherently very smooth. They each incorporate a copper shorting ring
in the magnetic circuit to reduce and linearise inductance and
therefore, reduce harmonic and inter-modulation distortions at high
sound pressure levels. The two woofer cones couple acoustically at
low frequencies and are port loaded for extremely high power
handling.
The tweeter is a specially developed version of the Epos Mi tweeter,
with anodised aluminium dome, Kapton voice coil former, braided
lead-out wires and Ferro-Fluid damping. The centre pole is damped
under the dome and vented into a contoured, felt-filled, rear
chamber to damp the fundamental resonance frequency.
Crossover:
The crossover design of the Epos Encore 50 is revolutionary. It
allows the user unparalleled flexibility to compensate for
individual room acoustics, without compromising sound quality in any
way. The tonal balance of the speaker may be easily changed by the
user to increase or decrease the tweeter and midrange output in
1.5dB steps, via an aperture in the bottom of the speaker and
plinth. The crossovers use high-grade customised ‘Epos’
polypropylene capacitors and non-polarised electrolytic capacitors,
which are bypassed with polypropylene capacitors on the mid-range
and tweeter. It also uses air-core inductors, a tapped
autotransformer for adjusting the mid-range output and laminated
steel-core inductors. Metal-oxide resistors are paralleled where
necessary to achieve high power rating and a custom heatsink is used
to reduce the temperature.
The high sensitivity mid-range is attenuated by a tapped auto
transformer, which doubles as the high-pass crossover inductor. The
tweeter network also has variable attenuation via metal-oxide
resistors. The maximum sensitivity treble position by-passes all
attenuation. Passive components are mounted on a high quality, glass
fibre PCB, mechanically isolated from the cabinet.
The crossover PCB’s are designed to be completely, or partially,
by-passed, to enable the user to configure the speaker in passive or
active mode. Epos, will offer a custom DAC with programmable digital
crossover to suit any make of amplification system. In short, it has
unparalleled flexibility.
The ongoing development for a future user upgrade to the Epos Encore
50 will represent yet another great leap forward in Epos speaker
design and will have music lovers giving it a ‘standing ovation’
whilst applauding this exceptional speaker.

Epos M22i |
$2599 |
|

|
The current
flagship of the Mi range of speakers, the 2 ½- way M22i, has deeper
bass and higher power handling than the M16i. In designing the M22i,
the Epos engineering team designed a high performance two channel
speaker that would be equally at home in a home theatre application.
The M22i uses the revised Epos 25mm (1 in.) low distortion metal
dome tweeter, designed for smooth, clear and extended treble. The
upper frequency crossover is centered on 5kHz and the minimalistic
1st order crossover is simply a polypropylene film capacitor.
Epos has designed a robust new 165mm (6.5in.) mid-range woofer with
die-cast aluminum alloy chassis, phase plug and molded
polypropylene cone. Its curved cone profile and graduated thickness
were engineered to ‘roll off’ high frequencies mechanically, in a
smooth fashion. It also has very high power handling. As such, the
woofer requires no electrical crossover (neither high pass, nor low
pass) to reproduce dynamic, natural bass and mid-range frequencies
in this model.
The mid-range driver runs in a sealed chamber, with the tweeter. It
is designed to naturally roll-off around 80Hz, with useful output
below that. The woofer and mid-bass output overlap and work
effectively as one bigger unit. This reinforces the power and
dynamics of this compact speaker.
The 165mm (6.5in.) bass driver is similar to the midrange but has a
weighted dust cap instead of a phase plug. It is mounted in a
separate chamber in the lower section of the cabinet and is loaded
with a rear-firing port, flared at both ends for low turbulence and
minimal distortion. It is also filtered by the crossover to limit
frequencies above 100Hz.
Together, the woofer and mid-range units handle very high powers. We
recommended that the M22i should be partnered with an amplifier that
is capable of driving a four Ohm load to high levels.
The tri-wirable input panel is made from solid anodized aluminum
alloy, with sturdy high-spec terminals suited for spade lug or other
types of plugs. High grade metal links join the terminals together
and can be removed for separate connection to each driver.
Great care has been taken with the manufacturing of the cabinets.
They are grain pattern matched for each pair. Internally, extensive
bracing and 25mm (1 in.) thick front and rear baffles have been
skillfully engineered to reduce unwanted cabinet vibration and
coloration. Grilles are made of silk cloth, over an MDF frame, for
easy integration with home furnishings, although the M22i is equally
attractive without the grilles. A black lacquered integral plinth,
which includes sturdy steel inserts to take adjustable 8mm carpet
spikes, completes the package.
Component Overview Tweeter: Epos 25mm aluminum dome with high-temperature voice coil,
Ferrofluid cooling and ferrite magnet system. Magnetically shielded.

Epos AVS 5.1 |
$1795 |
|

|
The AVS 5.1 system is the latest Epos Home Theatre package, designed
to meet the exacting demands of the discerning listener. This
elegant piano gloss black speaker package provides sound quality to
match its stunning looks. Constructed in solid MDF cabinets, these
sculptured cabinets are painted and polished to a high-gloss finish
which is popular in many homes today.
Satellites
The satellite speakers are based on two new drivers from Epos. A
metal dome tweeter, similar to the one used in the new ELS8 and a
long throw 4” paper-pulp cone mid-bass driver mounted in a pressed
steel chassis. These drivers are magnetically shielded. With two
forward firing ports they are well suited to being mounted close to
a rear wall if required. A multiple order crossover uses high-grade
close-tolerance components to maintain high sound quality expected
from an Epos speaker. They are voiced for Home Theatre, but are
equally suited to music reproduction. A matching elegant AVS metal
stand is also available which positions the satellites above
furniture to give the best results.
Centre Channel
The centre channel speaker is based on the same drive units used in
the satellites. Using two mid-bass drives and one tweeter and
forward firing tuning ports, they are a perfect match for any system
and are a small enough to fit in most TV equipment stands.
Sub woofer
An attractive powered Sub woofer is supplied in the package. It uses
a specially developed 8” paper cone long-throw woofer, with 2” voice
coil. It’s powered by a custom made 100 Watt analogue amplifier with
adjustments for volume, frequency and phase. The woofer is forward
firing with a removable cloth grille and large down-firing port.
Therefore, it must be mounted on 2” (50mm) high feet, to allow the
port to breath. It is supplied with a simple remote control for
adjusting the volume and powering on and off. It is cosmetically
matched to the centre channel and satellite in high gloss black.

Epos 12i |
$1199
|
|

|
Traditionally the core of any Epos speaker series, the M12i is the
ideal loudspeaker for those enthusiasts who prefer a stand-mount
over a floor-stand option.
As with all speakers in the Mi range, the 12i is designed to meet
all the demands of today’s two-channel and home-theatre audio. It is
equally at home with music or movies and is fully magnetically
shielded. If the M12i is to be used in a home theatre application,
the M8i centre channel and M5i, used for rears, make ideal choices.
The M12i uses the revised Epos 25mm (1 in.) low distortion metal
dome tweeter, designed to have smooth, clear and extended treble.
Featuring a strong die-cast aluminum alloy face plate, molded
surround, ferrite magnet and Ferrofluid cooling, it is a significant
improvement over the earlier M tweeter. The upper frequency
crossover is centered on 5kHz and the minimalistic 1st order
crossover is simply a polypropylene film capacitor.
As such, the
woofer requires no electrical crossover to reproduce dynamic,
natural bass and mid-range frequencies in this model. To reproduce
bass cleanly and powerfully, it is loaded at the rear with a port
flared at both ends, which reduces turbulence and distortion.
The bi-wirable input panel is made from solid anodized aluminum
alloy, with sturdy high-spec terminals suited for spade lug or other
types of plugs. High-grade metal links join the terminals together
and can be removed for separate connection to each driver.
Equally attractive with or without the silk cloth grilles, the M12i
is offered in a choice of three beautiful real-wood veneers. It
seamlessly wraps around the front edges of the pattern matched
cabinets. The front and rear baffles are 25mm (1 in.) thick to
reduce unwanted vibration and coloration.

Epos M8i |
$849
|
|

|
Epos approached the design of its M8i centre channel speaker
exactly as you would expect - with no compromise to sound quality.
Engineered specifically for the critical requirements of
centre-channel reproduction, it has powerful bass, a fast, dynamic
sound and high power handling. It is, of course, magnetically
shielded.
The M8i includes the revised Epos 25mm (1 in.) low-distortion metal
dome tweeter, designed to have smooth, clear extended treble. This
tweeter features a strong die-cast aluminum alloy face plate,
molded surround, ferrite magnet and Ferrofluid cooling.
The new Epos 140 mm (5.5in.) high power mid-range woofer reproduces
dynamic, natural bass and mid-range frequencies. Two such units are
used in this model, isolated from each other in separate rear-ported
enclosures and positioned either side of the tweeter. With two
woofers working together at low frequencies, power handling and
sound levels are greatly increased.
The M8i features an unusual crossover which reduces coloration from
the two closely spaced mid-bass units. The upper crossover frequency
is centered on 3kHz and incorporates film capacitors in critical
locations. The bi-wirable input panel is made from solid anodized
aluminum alloy, with sturdy high-spec terminals suited for spade
lug or other types of plugs. High-grade metal links join the
terminals together and can be removed for separate connection to
each driver.
Centre channels can pose difficulties with placement but Epos has
provided the perfect solution with the M8i. The cabinet is now
rounded on the bottom and flat on the top. It is also supplied with
a contoured plinth, so that the angle of the speaker can be adjusted
to point at the listener.
The M8i is styled to complement any décor. With its silk cloth
grille and beautifully manufactured real wood cabinets, it will
easily integrate with all furnishings.

Epos MSub
|
$1299 |

The M SUB has
a powerful 10" loudspeaker driver fitted to the bottom of the
cabinet, with 2" voice coil and large magnet size to handle very
high power levels for long periods without distress. Its paper cone
diaphragm is very stiff to keep distortion and coloration to a
minimum. The rubber suspension surround is smaller than normal and
quite stiff, which also helps to reduce distortion and low frequency
over-hang. In short it has been designed to enable the M Sub to
integrate perfectly with a two-channel system that requires
additional bass extension. However, it is also well suited to the
needs of a 5.1 system and can provide exceptional bass extension for
movies. To further boost the fidelity the M SUB has a very stiff cabinet
with extensive internal bracing and thick walls, which is rarely
found in conventional subwoofers. It has a completely sealed section
at the back of the cabinet to house its high powered 300 Watt
amplifier. This technique is more normally found in professional
speakers.
To further improve the sound quality Epos does not use port tuning
to achieve increased bass extension. This helps to avoid air
turbulence noises ('chuffing') from interfering with the fidelity of
the loudspeaker. It also avoids the usual peak in bass at one
frequency that usually characterizes the sound of inferior 5.1 type
subwoofers.
As a general rule, stereo systems tend to be difficult to integrate
with conventional sub woofers because, for the most part, sub
woofers are generally not designed to match them, and therefore suit
5.1 systems only. The Epos M SUB is different and was conceived as a
means of extending the frequency response of a small pair of
bookshelf speakers, rather than just producing large outputs at one
particular frequency, such as 60 Hz.
This may appear to contradict established principles, but Epos
engineers have not limited themselves only to designing a product
that plays 'one note' sound. For that reason the M SUB is capable of
extending low frequencies with a relatively flat response down to 20
Hz. This is most unusual and would normally be unheard of in
conventional woofers because, apart from anything else, their
cabinets and amplifiers would rattle and buzz, due to the simple
method of construction used. As a consequence of the design
principles, this M SUB is exceptionally dynamic when part of a 5.1
system.
Back panel controls include variable Volume, Low Filter, High Filter
and Phase adjustment controls. Low and High Level Inputs allow the M
sub to be driven either from loudspeaker outputs direct from a power
amp or pre-amp signal, which will not load the driving amplifier as
the M sub's low level input is high impedance. Its Power Switch
features a standby function that sends the amplifier to sleep when
not used and wakes up automatically when it receives a signal. The
amplifier is able to work in most regions as it has an AC Voltage
Selector Switch and mains fuse, accessible from the rear panel.
Additional features to be found in the M Sub are over-current
protection and over temperature cut-out. The M SUB does not use a
compression limiter to pre-distort the signals it cannot handle.
However, no amplifier has infinite power capabilities and has to be
protected against destroying itself under extreme conditions.
With a cosmetic design similar to the M series range of speakers,
the M SUB is available in the three finishes - light cherry, dark
cherry and black ash.
The M Sub is designed to be a down firing speaker, with fixed height
legs to stand on. These can be used on their own or with the
matching wooden plinth that protects the driver and allows the
driver to breath properly. 6mm carpet spikes or soft foam pads can
be fixed to the bottom of the plinth, depending on the floor surface
or personal preference.
