ELS3

The first in a line of lower cost speakers, the ELS-3 mini monitor maintains the high standards expected of any product bearing the Epos name.

Designed not only for high performance two channel operation, these new competitively priced Epos speakers will further satisfy a requirement in the 5.1 home cinema market, ensuring there is no need to compromise the audio quality in the name of home entertainment.

Utilising a two-way bass reflex design, the ELS3 incorporates a 130mm woofer with injection moulded polypropylene cone with dust cap and rubber rolled surround on a heavy die-cast aluminium chassis. It has a dual magnet and shielding can, further enhancing its use in a home theatre application.

The 25mm aluminium dome neodymium tweeter is an entirely new Epos design and features the Epos logo directly moulded onto the faceplate. In true Epos style, the ELS3 has a minimalistic crossover.

In a deviation from the Epos real wood veneer cabinet, this new ELS3 cabinet features a vinyl wrap finish allowing the cost to be highly competitive. The choice of three colours remains, enabling the addition of these speakers to complement earlier models, should they be desired for use in a rear channel application.

As you would expect from the manufacturer of such a well-respected brand, this new and exciting Epos ELS3 has a performance level that has to be heard to be believed.

Epos ELS3C

$300

The Epos ELS 3C centre channel utilises the same drive units as the ELS 3 and is therefore ideally matched for use in a home cinema application.

Featuring a 25mm metal dome tweeter with neodymium magnet, together with two 5 ½” woofers, this centre channel uses a new die cast aluminium chassis with a cone and surround similar to that being used in the M5 woofer. The Epos logo is embossed on the tweeter faceplate.

In designing this centre channel, we have introduced an unusual and acoustically advanced crossover which reduces the colouration when two mid/bass units are in close proximity to each other.

Available in a choice of three finishes, the Epos ELS 3C centre channel is ideal for use with other ELS products in a home cinema application.

Epos ELS303

$700

Entering the marketplace in June 2005 the ELS 303 is the latest powerful new speaker from Epos. Combining the sonic strengths of the ELS 3 bookshelf speaker with an integrated 130mm woofer, this 2 ½ way floor-standing speaker now covers a much wider range of frequencies than a bookshelf or stand mount speaker can.

The ELS 303 utilises the Swift Tweeter and Lightning 130 midrange driver from the ELS 3 with improvements to the cross-over and midrange linearity. Epos has also developed a new 130mm woofer, based upon the same chassis as the Lightning 130 midrange. It can be differentiated by the round dust cap and lack of cone damping material used on the outside. The woofer is coupled to the rest of the speaker in a 2 ½ way fashion with a high linearity crossover which rolls off at 100Hz. This combines with the low frequency output of the midrange to give added power handling to the bass, while maintaining a very slim 150mm front baffle, which improves imaging at high frequencies.

The cabinet has the same footprint as the ELS3 but the height is 87.5cms, including the plinth but not spikes. This brings the tweeter up to the optimum 81cms listening height to the user, when seated. The midrange section is not ported. The woofer section is braced and sealed off from the midrange section and is tuned with a port to 47Hz, which determines the lower cut-off frequency of 43Hz for the speaker.

Because the ELS 303 is a tall and slim speaker, it needs to be stabilised to prevent it being accidentally knocked over. Epos has designed a PVC foiled MDF plinth, which is attached to the bottom of the cabinet with 6mm bolts. The plinth increases the footprint of the speaker to make it more stable. 6mm spikes are also supplied to help decouple unwanted energy from the cabinet/plinth, when in use, through to the floor.

To enable the user to connect the bass driver separately from the midrange and tweeter, a gold plated bi-wiring terminal is used. Metal links join the upper and lower sections together and can be removed by the user to allow bi-wiring.

Epos ELS Sub

$700

The ELS SUB has a massive and powerful 10” loudspeaker driver fitted to the front of the cabinet, with enough magnet strength and voice coil size to handle very high power levels for long periods without distress. Its cone diaphragm is very stiff to keep distortion and colouration to a minimum. The rubber suspension surround is smaller than normal and quite stiff, which also helps to reduce distortion and low frequency over-hang. In short it has been designed to be more appropriate for a two-channel bass unit than a conventional sub-woofer.

To further boost the fidelity of the ELS SUB it has a very stiff cabinet with extensive internal bracing which is rarely found in conventional subwoofers. It has a completely separate section at the back of the cabinet to house the amplifier, which is more normally found in professional speakers and not found in conventional subwoofers at any price.

To further improve the sound quality Epos does not use port tuning to achieve increased bass extension, which avoids ‘chuffing’ air turbulence noises interfering with the fidelity of the loudspeaker.

As a general rule, stereo systems tend to be difficult to integrate with conventional sub woofers because, for the most part, sub woofers are generally not designed to match them, and therefore suit 5.1 systems only. The Epos ELS SUB is different and was conceived as a means of extending the frequency response of a small pair of bookshelf speakers, rather than just producing large outputs at one particular frequency, such as 60 Hz.

This may appear to contradict established principles, but Epos engineers have not limited themselves to only trying to produce a product that plays ‘one note’ sound. For that reason the ELS SUB is capable of extending low frequencies with a relatively flat response down to 20 Hz. This is most unusual and would normally be unheard of in conventional woofers, because apart from anything else their cabinets and amplifiers would rattle and buzz, due to the simple method of construction used.

As a consequence of the design principles, this ELS SUB is dynamic when part of a 5.1 system.

Back panel controls include High Level Input, Volume, Low Filter, Power Switch (when left on with no signal the sub’s standby feature activates, AC Voltage Selector Switch, High Filter, Phase, Low Level Input, and High Level Input.

Additional features to be found in this sub are both over current cut-out and over temperature cut-out. The ELS SUB does not use a compression limiter to pre-distort the signals it cannot handle. No amplifier has infinite power capabilities and has to be protected against destroying itself under extreme conditions. To protect the sub’s 300W amplifier from excessive current demands it has been designed to cut the signal to the speaker in the event of an overload. The sound output is restored automatically immediately the demand is lower. To protect the amplifier from damage caused by excessive heat, there is a thermal sensor attached to the amplifier’s heatsink that is set to trip the output if the internal temperature exceeds a pre-set level. The reasons this might occur are high ambient room temperature, direct sunlight, high level operation for long periods and insufficient ventilation of the amplifier control panel.

With a finish similar to the ELS 3 speakers and ELS 3 centre channel, the new ELS SUB will be available in the same three finishes – light cherry, dark cherry and black ash. The sub woofer has a black fabric grille and is sold complete with spikes.

Epos ELS 5.1

$1500

Two pairs of ELS3 speakers, one ELS 3C centre channel and the powerful new ELS subwoofer make up this system and even though the 4 monitors are compact in size, they certainly do justice to large scale cinema sound requirements.

The individual features of each of the component parts of this 5.1 system can be found on the respective product pages. However the smooth integration of the six speakers is the key to the success of Epos’s first entry into the world of home cinema.

In reviewing this 5.1 system from Epos, the U.K. magazine What Hi-Fi loudly sings its praises - highlighting amongst other things ‘its prodigious timing’ and ‘its barnstorming movie capability’.

The Epos system was the overall Group Test Winner against some very strong competition.

Epos 12.2

$895

The Epos M series loudspeakers evolved from the time honoured ES range of the eighties and nineties and until recently the M12 was the entry level speaker for the range. This speaker was first designed in 1999 and December 2003 saw the introduction of its successor – the M12.2

Still a two way bass reflex design, the M12.2 features a 150mm woofer complete with phase plug. Replacing the plastic chassis used in the original M12 is the all new Epos die cast chassis. The tweeter used in the M12.2 is a 25mm aluminium dome with ferrofluid cooling and neodymium magnet system.

As you would expect with a speaker of this quality, there is provision for bi-wiring via the two sets of 5 way binding posts.

The real wood veneer cabinet, available in a choice of light cherry, dark cherry or black, is beautifully finished and the metal grille can be easily removed if desired.

Listening to the new M12.2 is a delight. If used in a home cinema application, the addition of M5 speakers for rear channel use together with the M8 centre channel guarantees a home theatre speaker system of the highest calibre.

When placed on the optional ST12 open frame stands designed for this particular model, it is said they perform at their best.

Epos M16

$1595

The latest in the Epos range of real-wood floor standing speakers, the M16 is all about accuracy, dynamics and poise. It will perform well in 2 channel or home theater systems………

The Epos M16 is new a floor-standing, rear-ported, two and a half way speaker finished in a polished real-wood veneer. It is supplied with a custom wooden plinth which can be used with four 6mm carpet spikes, which can be adjusted to make the cabinet tilt backwards, if required.

Two and half way means that the bass and mid-bass drivers are run in parallel at some frequencies. The bass driver is filtered with an inductor to limit its upper frequency response to about 150Hz. Below that the two drivers work as one to reinforce the power and dynamics of this relatively small speaker. This design has the mid-bass and bass drivers running in separate, sealed chambers.

The tweeter is similar to that used in all the M series products. It uses a 25mm diameter 50 micro thick aluminium dome with ferro-fluid cooling and neodymium magnet system. This improves power handling and because all Epos tweeters are designed to produce a low distortion output down to 500Hz, it creates a very wide and open sound stage in the mid-range.

The M16’s 130mm (5¼”) midrange driver is an all new device, which has been evolved from the M5’s design. It features an alloy chassis for strength and a moulded polypropylene cone for fast and accurate signal handling. It has a solid phase plug and a powerful, magnetically shielded, motor system to allow it to handle high powered signals.

The 130mm (5¼”) bass driver is similar to the midrange but has lower impedance and also uses a dust cap to cover the voice coil former and not a phase plug. With its ventilated voice coil, it is capable handling extremely high power. It is recommended that it be partnered with an amplifier that is capable of driving a 4 Ohm load to high power levels.

The M16 has been evolved from the design of the M5, which means that it does have a multi-element crossover filter for the middle and high frequencies, which is positioned in the top chamber nearest to the drivers. It also has a single inductor for the bass, together with a conjugate circuit to flatten the response in the upper bass region where the mid-bass and bass driver sum their output, to remove the effect of chestiness which can be undesirable especially when listening to male voices. The bass crossover filter is located in the bottom chamber to avoid magnetic interference with the middle and high frequency filter.

Connection to the M16 is tri-wirable through three pairs of metal binding posts, situated at the bottom of the cabinet to help keep speaker cabling more tidy. The internal wiring uses solid core DNM wire.

The rear port has been constructed from machined MDF trumpet shape, which has been sprayed to cosmetically match the finish of the cabinet. The tube length is adjusted to produce deep bass output down to 40 Hz. At the inside end of the port tube, another machined MDF wooden trumpet shape helps to avoid wind turbulence from interfering with the overall performance of the speaker. This turbulence can be a common problem in ported designs.

The M16 is perfect as a high performance 2 channel floor-standing monitor. However, it has also been engineered with home theatre application in mind. Its design improves imaging and enhances the pace, rhythm and timing characteristics that have long been the hallmark of Epos speaker systems.

If used as the front left and right speakers in a home theatre application, the choice of either M12.2 or M5 speakers for the rear together with the M8 centre channel and new M subwoofer guarantees a cinema speaker package of the highest order.

Epos M5

$650

The M5 speaker is the smaller of the two bookshelf speakers in the current M series range of products.

In designing this fully shielded 2-way bass reflex design speaker, the Epos engineering team has fully considered the demands of today’s home theatre requirements. Importantly the speaker equally stands its ground in the world of two-channel audio.
The fully shielded M5 uses a 25mm metal dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet. The 137.5mm woofer uses the new Epos die cast aluminium chassis and features a phase plug. The speaker has provision for bi-wiring.

If the M5 is used in a home cinema application, the Epos M8 centre channel is the ideal choice.

Epos has designed a stand suitable for the M5 – the ST35, available in either black or silver.

The choice of three finishes in real wood veneer, ensures the speaker will integrate into the furnishings of any home. With a front veneered baffle, the M5 is equally attractive without the grilles and the addition of the Epos name moulded into the tweeter is an elegant feature.

Epos M22

$1995

The flagship of the Epos range, the M22 is tri-wirable, thanks to three pairs of metal five-way binding posts. Providing separate feeds to each of the drive units through premium quality connectors offers worthwhile gains in stereo imagery, control and detail resolution.

The three driver complement is as follows:
Tweeter: 25mm aluminium dome tweeter with optimised neodymium magnet system and ferrofluid cooling
Mid Range: Magnetically shielded 150mm polymer cone with 32mm voice coil complete with injection moulded phase plug, utilising the Epos die cast aluminium chassis
Bass Driver: Magnetically shielded 150mm polymer cone with 32mm voice coil complete with weighted injection moulded dust cap, utilising the Epos die cast aluminium chassis

The cabinet itself is a low diffraction design, eliminating secondary sources of sound, improving stereo imaging and detail resolution. Extensive internal bracing reduces cabinet coloration. The cabinet is in two sections internally—the top section houses the tweeter and mid range and is similar in size to the Epos M12.2, whilst the lower section housing the bass unit goes right to the floor and ensures accurate low frequency performance.

Available in black, light cherry or dark cherry, this elegant loudspeaker evokes all the qualities you would expect from the very best of British design.

To complement the M22, Epos has designed an optional plinth. Not only does this provide greater stability but also gives the speaker an elegance which sees it as a fine piece of furniture as well as one of the best loudspeakers at its price point.
